Some days one encounters an essay that's seeping so much wisdom that one wants to rub it against one's head in the hope that one may grow wiser oneself. Or read and re-read it it with time and attention and try to understand it via more traditional methods. Today for me it's "Trusting your own judgement on 'AI' is a huge risk" by @baldur

After the crash the primary usage of "AI" will be for generating fake online presences with acceptable bland politics so that you can cross borders https://mastodon.social/@campuscodi/114655975804850106

We finished setting up the La Conner & Swinomish Library display on Stonewall and why we celebrate Pride.

The library staff have told us that multiple people from the town and outside have already stopped by just to see the exhibit and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and emotional

So proud of my wife Mollie Pepper for doing the research and writing, Tillinghast Postal for the amazing graphics, and the library for supporting us and extending their book collection to include even more LGBTQIA2S+ books for adults and kids.

What a time to be alive.

@cykonot The one thing HKers weren't very good at, was building lasting offline support networks though.
Lots of kids (due to trying to stay anonymous) were left to deal with the results of their experiences on their own.

@firefly @cykonot

This is why the Chinese government recognized the need to isolate, control and surveil their country's internet to such an extreme, to stamp out any potential it has to bring people together in common cause.

@firefly Left to deal how? Can you say more?

(Also any pointers to accounts of these issues with examples super welcome. I am in a position to do something about this, educate me.)

@cykonot

@siderea @cykonot Sorry, but many accounts on twitter from that time went silent already a few years ago, due to the dangers now.
There was a gap between the younger people and their parents views. Many lied to protect themselves, their fellow protestors and their families too. During protests people coordinated. But on location and anonymously via various means.

I was just (an also foreign) observer. Am not at liberty to tell you more.

@siderea If you mean experiences: There are a few hk films, that deal with issues and trauma: "night is young", there is one short film about the polytechnic university siege ( but don't think it is in circulation), student suicide rates have been climbing since 2019 in hk.
A few (in comparison) were prosecuted.
And I remember that they started reminding each other to drink water and (each on their own) to watch their mental health.
Right now. There is a feeling of hopeless and helplessness.
PTSD and protests: How the violence on Hong Kong’s streets impacts mental health

The first panic attack took place two weeks after Sarah (not her real name) was caught in the middle of an evening protest in Admiralty on September 29, during which multiple rounds of tear-gas were fired by the police. “I’ve never felt afraid for my life. I’ve always been brave,” she told HKFP. “I’ve always […]

@cykonot

There's a lot to be learned from the HK protests.

They were really disciplined and smart, but at a disadvantage because the city was isolated from a highly propagandized and brainwashed mainland population that was cheering on the brutalization of the protestors

In the US we see acts of protest springing up in multiple cities already, that is a good sign, maga is the minority and while they are just as brutal and fascist as the CCP, they're much less efficient right now. Organize.

@cykonot

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods or tactics or strategy to reach a common goal."

@cykonot

Yeah. You against nazis? You're on my side. All I need to know.

@cykonot

That's really smart.

The movement is leaderless but not chaotic. It self-regulates even as it constantly reinvents itself.

That's how the people at the protests behave-- all of us together.

Now if only everybody would act like that!

@cykonot love this. where is this from? I’d like to share elsewhere.

"Let every man work for the abolition of slavery in his own way. I would help all and hinder none." -- Frederick Douglass

@cykonot Yeah. I have a lot of trepidation about this. This is one turning point of many. I don’t think we win this one. I think the wise move is to retreat, and regroup when we find an effective move.

Trump is going to become vulnerable as his economics play out, and Russia starts to lose without our help. Europe is ascends, and America is sets. We have friends, we just have to let them emerge.

@Extra_Special_Carbon @cykonot I’m not certain retreat will be an option.

@Cykonot Do not split seems a wise idea for one, however the use or deliberate non-use of force also seems too actively divisive to survive within that idea.
The use of force is, luckily after all, practised by particular minorities on either side of a conflict. Either side is bargaining between moral and efficiency and realisation of their idea, and in that regard actively self-isolating from #donotsplit. Let's leave them there.
