The Tattoo Tradition exhibition at the SF main library is ending soon.

We just happened to catch it at wiki’s birthday and it was amazing. It was inspiring especially as I learn more about Ryukyu Tattoo culture.

A few folks in the photos had tattoos of the Hidari gomon symbol which is connected with the Ryukyu kingdom and Okinawan karate

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) announces the opening of a powerful and provocative new exhibition, Living Tattoo Traditions: American Irezumi and Beyond opening Oct. 2, 2025 and on view through March 1, 2026. Through photographs and interviews with 24 artists in the Bay Area and beyond, a hand-painted mural and original artworks, video interviews, sculptures and hand-carved masks , the exhibition explores the unique way in which the art of the tattoo tells stories of identity, place and cross-cultural embodiment and experience.

We went into the city today to get this amazing library card!!!

I hate it when people demonize rioters, a story.

in 1992 during the Rodney King riots my grandpa being mistaken for being korean and without the protection of "roof top koreans", lost his store in Compton.

It destroyed us financially and my grandpa had to re-finance his house to stay afloat. He barely retired and lived only on social security income which my grandmother didn't qualify for because they didn't realize she needed to "officially work" for 10 years to qualify. She worked every single day since she immigrated here in 1975.

When people hear this story they assume that I blame the rioters for it. I never did because grandpa never did. Only recently did I realize what that might have been about.

Ryukyuans were annexed by the Meiji Government in 1879, their culture outlawed, their children conscripted by the imperial army, and it's sovereignty stripped.

I wonder if he understood what violence against oppression meant and that's why he never demonized the rioters.

I'm sorry to see obituaries for Dr. Gladys West this morning: https://thezebra.org/2026/01/18/dr-gladys-west-mathematician-whose-work-made-gps-possible-dies-at-95/

She was brilliant and did a lot of incredibly important scientific work, a lot of which was hidden/uncredited early on, because she was a mathematician in a time when "computer" was a job description.

Getting close to new years means mochi deliveries to friends.

Paul’s grandma did the same for years and now it’s our turn.

My favorite way to eat it is to fry it and eat it with daikon oroshi, negi, and ponzu.
