Mother. Wife. Grandmother. College student. Cancer survivor. Veteran. Cat lover.

My name is Nancy and am a two-time #cancer survivor. I am an older #college student with one semester left before graduating with a degree in #Computer Networks and #Cybersecurity. I have 5 amazing grandchildren and 2 are in #college. I love to glass etch. I miss traveling as I am a COVID hermit. I have 4 #Cats and 4 finches. I am happy to be here!

I forgot to mention that I was SSHing into my newly created EC2 instance.
When #jimmycarter won the New Hampshire primary, I was at an event that same night to congratulate him. There were many people around him, so when I reached in to shake his hand I didn't want to let go. All of a sudden you could hear a "whoosh" and there was a complete circle with him and I in the center. Apparently the secret service pushed everyone back to assess the situation. I was 15. I asked him if he remembered me, the girl who flubbed his introduction. and he said he would never forget.
I worked for #jimmycarter campaign as a Junior in high school. I was asked to introduce him at a city event. All I had to say was "And the next President of the United States, Jimmy Carter!" When I got to "And the next President of the United States" I FROZE. He was on my right behind me and he stepped up and whispered in my ear, "Jimmy Carter". Then I repeated his name. Yes, I knew then at the age of 15 that I had had the most embarrassing moment I would ever have in my life.

My column about apps on Mastodon appears in print today. I'm told it did very well on the web after publishing on Friday. It got MANY boosts and Favorites here on Mastodon (thank you!), so I assume that's where a lot of traffic came from. It'll be very interesting to see what kind of print-reader feedback I get via email.

This is a gift link to the story, so it should get at least some of you past the paywall if you don't have a subscription. If not, use archive.ph.

As Twitter kills third-party apps, new life blooms on Mastodon

Developers who crafted now-defunct apps for Twitter can devote their attention to the network that’s become the primary bird site refuge.

Anyone staying on #Twitter after tonight's #TwitterPurge of #Journalists are in over their heads and in denial. It's dead, time to move on.

Reach out to your friends while you still can, pick an instance for them, get them started here. Explain about #introduction posts and how hastags are essential for reaching the wider fediverse.

Starting over somewhere new is always hard.

#Twitter is outright lying to its users now, to prevent its competition from spreading.

No matter. We'll continue to grow. Please Boost this post and spread the word that Mastodon is being being deplatformed on Twitter.

@georgetakei @natematias now they’ve just gone and blocked links to mastodon

Woah. Watching Twitter misuse our research by putting warnings on links to Mastodon.

Here for example is the warning that @georgetakei "may be unsafe."

In a study led by Ben Kaiser at Princeton, we tested the effect of interstitial warnings on user behavior.

Warnings That Work: Combating Misinformation Without Deplatforming

Both President Biden and Facebook have taken steps to dial down the temperature since last week’s dustup, but the fundamental problem remains: How can platforms effectively combat misinformation with steps short of takedowns?
