I explore innovative technologies and approaches in education, and am the Director of Learning Innovation at a university in Baltimore, MD. I read a lot and do puzzles. I enjoy tasty beverages. Bald is beautiful baby #alopecia
A consortium of institutions did a significant study on textbooks costs this fall, and they recently shared their results. I highly suggest looking through these slides and adding this data to your #OER presentations! https://scarab.bates.edu/ils_scholarship/11/
Fall 2022 Student Textbook Survey Results

During the Fall 2022 semester, eleven Oberlin Group institutions in association with the Open and Equitable Access to Scholarship Working Group conducted a student textbook survey adapted from the 2016 Florida Virtual Campus survey and the 2019 Gettysburg College survey. The goal of the project was to gain a better understanding of how the costs of course materials impact our own students. This presentation provides an overview of those results as well as action steps libraries can take to better support our students. This study was coordinated by the Oberlin Group - Open and Equitable Working Group.

I take a couple issues with this, but overall, it was really well done. šŸ˜†

Gasoline Car Review

I recently purchased a Mazda Miata. This car is interesting because instead of running on electricity, it is powered by a combustible liquid called gasoline. The vehicle has an engine that mixes the…

Our kids asked who Dave Grohl was in the Super Bowl ad. ā€œOh! He was in Nirvana and Foo Fighters andā€¦ā€ ā€œyeah, he looks like the guy from the mailroomā€ šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
@johnvoorhees @viticci I have been using Footpath for years to map out workout routes (running/walking/hiking/biking) *before* I go out, particuarly when I’m away from home (conferences, vacation, etc.). That way I can explore but also know I won’t end up so far away that it will be physically difficult to get home. Toggling between snapping to streets and freehand, while making sure I figure out routes that allow me to hit locations I want to visit while I’m out, has been amazing. Great app!

App Spotlight: Footpath

Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch

The Details:
- Route planning and tracing
- Distance and elevation details
- Multiple map options like biking, trail, and topo maps
- Turn-by-turn nav with offline support and workout tracking
- Apple Watch Ultra support

Bottom Line: An easy, intuitive way to plan outdoor activities with multiple mapping options, GPS, and workout tracking.

Quote of the day from a show we’re watching with the kids: ā€œEverything has an end. Only a sausage has two.ā€

One of the things we're looking at for the next release of #LineaSketch is better support for folks with colorblindness.

It's counterintuitive that this kind of accessibility is needed in a drawing app, but people are more amazing than you first realize.

We learned this lesson when Linea added support for VoiceOver 🤯

A question to artists that are color blind (either fully color blind or any partial color blindness on the spectrum). What process / tools / techniques do you use to compensate for that handicap? I'm red-green-blind myself, so I'm really curious to hear how other artists deal with this or similar conditions. :boost_ok: Boosts are appreciated #mastoart #art #illustration #conceptart

I wrote up an introduction to the Fediverse and to Mastodon for those *not* here who are trying to wrap their heads around what distributed, consensual association is like!

Mastodon: https://tidbits.com/2023/01/27/mastodon-a-new-hope-for-social-networking/

I hope I got the nuance right. These articles are aimed at the TidBITS readership, which comprises sage, experienced computer users with a reasonable skepticism about new stuff. I hope it’s something you can send to those folks in your lives!

Is Your Future Distributed? Welcome to the Fediverse! - TidBITS

A growing set of services let users on independently operated servers interlink with standard, open-source protocols for microblogging, photo sharing, and dozens of other purposes. Could the Fediverse be a solution to the ugliness of commercial service algorithms designed to drive outrage and titillation?

I like to sketch a bit, but I’ve used Linea Sketch for iOS off and on for years for visualizing home improvement projects, marking up work diagrams, and A LOT for doing word puzzles from sources that aren’t interactive. Layers, Pencil settings, and image support make it perfect for that stuff. My point is it’s great for lots of things in addition to sketching. Anyway, it seemed like an appropriate time to finally subscribe. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/linea-sketch/id1094770251 @Iconfactory @chockenberry @gedeonm
