Our White Rock Club is Five Years Old!

Five years ago, I helped form an amateur radio club in east Dallas. I'm happy to report it has done well! Here's what I just posted to the club website at www.wa5wrl.org As we complete our fifth year as a club, it’s fitting to look back at how far we’ve come. From an idea for an informal lake area radio group, first formulated by Randy W5WXY, Robinson KG5UVN, Tony NT5TM, my XYL Leslie and me, we’ve grown into a full-fledged radio…

Finally exited Xitter yesterday. I was an early user back in 2007 and was instrumental in getting our Fortune 500 company online. Now it’s Mastodon and BluesSky and I don’t miss a thing!
Watch Sunday Morning: Walden Pond: An endangered treasure - Full show on CBS

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has listed Walden Pond and Walden Woods, where Henry David Thoreau wrote his 1854 classic "Walden," one of "America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places." Historian Douglas Brinkley reports on how the Concord, Mass., pond and its surrounding, spiritually-nourishing woods – a storied part of our national heritage – is under threat from nearby development.

@vk6flab never got on HF but VHF showed no change. But my shack is on solar power with big battery that almost made it through the week.
Endured over 5 days without power last week after +70 mph winds took out power lines throughout the Dallas area. At one point, over 1,000,000 folks went dark. Luckily this happened during a mild weather week. My generator came through for us, and I was really surprised that a single propane tank can provide 16 hours of power. I’ll post a lessons learned doc on my blog here in a bit. Our local ham club stayed in contact with members throughout the ordeal. Glad to have the AC back on!
@melodicoffer @croyle hang in there. I’ve been a ham for 60 years but still enjoy it. I learn something new all the time and constantly encourage others to join the hobby. We started a neighborhood club here and now have over 25 members in just 5 years. We do need to encourage new hams. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with a 30 something guy that found our net on his scanner and is excited to join the fun! 73 from n5csu

As we do our silly Chicago tradition of dyeing the river a violent shade of green, I think it's a good time to remind people that our ancestors *reversed the flow of the river* to provide safe drinking water from Lake Michigan and earlier, in the 1860's, *lifted the entire city* to improve drainage and public health.

Remember that any time someone says heat pumps and renewable energy are hard.

Surfing the Airwaves

I've been fascinated with radio since I was a kid. When the first satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched in 1957, I sat in front of a big old console radio that had shortwave bands trying to figure out how I could hear the signal. I never found Sputnik’s “beep-beep” but I did hear a lot of other interesting things. I was fascinated with stations coming in over the airwaves, and spent hours listening to the BBC, Voice of America, Radio Moscow and even…

Searing commentary from Heather Cox Richardson on the media's disgusting double standards when it comes to Trump versus Biden.

Yesterday, Special Counsel Robert Hur, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in January 2023 to investigate President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents before he was president, released his report. It begins: “We conclude that no criminal charges are warranted in this matter. We would reach the same conclusion even if Department of Justice policy did not foreclose criminal charges against a sitting president.” The Department of Justice closed a similar case against former Vice President Mike Pence on June 1, 2023, days before Pence announced his presidential bid, with a brief, one-page letter.
