@thalassa in a personal level have a hard time watching comedy that makes you cringe. Depending on the level of embarrassment I have to stop, it's not fun to me, hahaha. But I don't think it's cultural in this case, I guess it's just me

@thalassa I can't remember it happening with a book, but once I watched I German movie that was said to be hilarious and to me it was a drama. I get the tragicomedy concept and I even like it, but this one was just drama, zero comedy to me.

The popular macho image of #CaptainKirk is so way off, especially in the context of the mid-60s, when the ideal male action hero was an unfeeling lone wolf (think Sean Connery's Bond, early John Wayne, etc). #StarTrek shows Kirk as connected, caring, even vulnerable, a foil to Spock's struggle to suppress emotion (which is arguably also about gender, but that's a whole other essay). Their dynamic was a huge part of the appeal to women, who flocked to ST fandom & invented slash.
