Encouraging non-technical people and organisations to set up their own online services instead of relying on massive corporations.

All the recommended services are free and open source, and available through managed hosting providers. You can find out more on my website at https://growyourown.services

🚫 Completely opposed to cryptocurrency, "web3", NFTs, blockchain, tokens, defi, daos etc. They are scams.

p.s. This part sums up a big problem in big tech:

"My Plea - I am asking for a human at Apple to review this case."

Big tech deliberately stops people being able to reach a human because they hate paying salaries to non-management. They try to automate everything.

By contrast, with community hosting you can always talk directly to the people who run your service. You might even know them in real life.

Similarly, with self-hosting you can fix it yourself or talk to people at hosting company.

This article by @parisba is why #CommunityHosting and #SelfHosting need to be normalised. They are the only way we can stop scenarios like this happening:

You might think this couldn't happen to you, but it could happen to anyone. It's especially scary as most big tech companies are in repressive countries.

It's much easier and cheaper than you think to make your own online services. I've done a guide for non-technical people at https://growyourown.services

20 Years of Digital Life, Gone in an Instant, thanks to Apple

Summary: A major brick-and-mortar store sold an Apple Gift Card that Apple seemingly took offence to, and locked out my entire Apple ID, effectively bricking my devices and my iCloud Account, Apple Developer ID, and everything associated with it, and I have no recourse. Can you help? Email paris AT paris.id.au (and read on for the details). ❤️ Here’s how Apple “Permanently” locked my Apple ID. I am writing this as a desperate measure.

p.p.p.s. If all this means nothing to you, here's a translation:

There's a feature that has been written for Mastodon which would stop profiles looking blank or outdated. It would let people on any server automatically see the latest posts on any profile.

The feature has to be reviewed by the lead developers of Mastodon before it can be released, but they still haven't reviewed it.

I'm encouraging people to react to the feature so that the lead developers notice it and review it.

p.s. Each server admin could configure how many posts this feature actually fetches. This would prevent the feature overwhelming a server's resources but still allow its users to see at least the latest posts (right now users often just see nothing or outdated posts, so latest posts would be huge improvement).

p.p.s. Apparently the first PR has to be merged before the second PR can be merged, so that's why there are two of them. If you're going to react, it's probably best to react to both.

Are you frustrated by blank or outdated profiles on Mastodon?

There are two crucial pull requests still waiting for review on Mastodon's Github which would automatically load latest posts to profiles no matter which server you're on:

➡️ https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/34597

If you're comfortable using Github, you might want to react to both these PRs to let Masto devs know there is interest in merging them!

(BTW these are by same contributor who did "fetch all replies" update.)

I can't believe my #selfhosting one year anniversary is coming up next week. @yunohost truly changed my digital life - for the better.

This is a 1st post in a 4 part miniseries intended for real newbies.

And now excuse me while I go hide in a cave expecting irate replies from sysadmins about certain things I wrote 😅

Tips for choosing your site's domain name:

-Keep it short and easy to type manually
-Choose something easy to spell in multiple languages
-Avoid potential homonyms (e.g. "knight" sounds like "night")
-Avoid hyphens
-Avoid offensive words as these may trigger automatic blocks on some platforms
-Avoid trademarks as they can cause legal difficulties
-Avoid using your site's software's name as it may change later

If you're running your own Fediverse server, it can be quite a lot of work to manually block every nasty server. To help with this, you can use pre-made blocklists assembled by admins of reliable servers.

There are many different lists you can choose from, choose the one that suits you best and seems most reliable to you.

There's more info about how to use premade blocklists on Mastodon at:

Have you considered making your own #GoToSocial server?

GoToSocial is a new Fediverse platform which is lighter than Mastodon and has more user safety features. It's compatible with Mastodon apps so there are already lots of ways to use it.

You don't need to be techy to set up a GTS server, there are managed hosting providers at https://fedihost.co/hosting/gotosocial and https://communick.com/gotosocial

If you ARE techy, there are manual installation instructions at https://docs.gotosocial.org
