Executive coach. Grandmother. Ecstatic cranky. #LongCovid #MECFS #Anti-Racism #Sweary We must love one another or die.

It wasn’t all that long ago when my own network was shallow AF. I had a good deal of diversity with respect to economic class, gender and sexual preference, and because I live in the Pacific Northwest I have lots of Asian in southeast Asian, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues.

And I had almost no Native or Black women in my circles. I addressed that by following interesting folks, WATCHING WHAT THEY WERE WATCHING AND READING WHAT THEY WERE READING and gradually developing relationships.

#galactica excuse bingo. @abebab nails it.
I’m seeing a lot of white mutuals uncritically celebrate the pleasant climate here at Mastodon. This tells me immediately that they have a very narrow and shallow network, because the Black women in my circles are experiencing overt #racism, #antisemitism, and #mansplaining.

#RuleOfThumb If you’re a white person, take a beat before you advise, comment, or critique a post from a Black or brown person. Challenge yourself to discover the hidden context, that you certainly do not possess. In other words, #DoYourHomework before you complain about, exclude, or correct folks.

This wouldn’t be necessary if we had a decent collective sense of history, but we don’t, oh well.

I have always loved the ending of Middlemarch:

“But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”

I proposed the world is changed by small people doing small things faithfully in the face of big evil.

Just over two weeks ago, I started taking hydroxyzine, a prescription and a histamine, 20 mg morning in evening. Prior to this I had been using certrizine and or loratadine. Changing to hydroxyzine (I started 10 mg twice a day) and gradually increasing the dose has made a huge difference in my #MCAS symptoms.

Because my system is calmer, it is now possible to notice how different foods and supplements affect me. This is a huge win all around. Your mileage may vary.

The most popular accounts to pay to be “verified” on Twitter Blue were disproportionately pornography, cryptocurrency shills, and overseas accounts in the Middle East. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/16/musk-twitter-email-ultimatum-termination/
Musk issues ultimatum to staff: Commit to ‘hardcore’ Twitter or take severance

It comes as Elon Musk’s first major feature, Twitter's Blue Verified, was halted while the company probes issues that arose from its launch.

The UN's announcement that the world's population had reached 8 billion is a reflection of a trend at play in the US, too: population growth less through more births than through fewer deaths. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/11/15/population-world-baby-boomers-united-states/
Like the world, America’s population is growing because it’s graying

The U.N.'s estimate that the global population hit 8 billion is a reminder of demographic patterns here at home.

All week, university students in the UK, US, and Canada will be striking with Fossil Free Research -- they're asking their universities to stop taking fossil fuel research money. Why? It materially shapes #climate policies and solutions.
A study out last week showed that empirically: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-022-01521-3.epdf?sharing_token=q6u3o3XLL_ziqLal_zfJk9RgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0PFHvJIHvJ_ACmLOp1FbbeYnNHRPkNNIlf-VIv3NozoIW-hh9MJFshD8VY-5P44f-8waRIQIFNAUe1byovgUh9P7aZRAS9XKJsSek7v-xl4U3z3uvq3pL4K5CqeatADXxI%3D

Been looking at how fossil fuel $ work on campuses for a while myself and tried to round it all up in this #podcast episode https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/universities-are-starting-to-say-no-to-fossil-fuel-funding/id1439735906?i=1000582993632

Favourability towards natural gas relates to funding source of university energy centres - Nature Climate Change

University-based energy centres play an important role in climate discourse but many are funded by fossil fuel businesses. This study shows that fossil-fuel-funded centres express more positive sentiment towards natural gas, compared to renewable energy, than those not funded by the fossil industry.
