Standard-issue linux FOSS nerd.

Somehow obtained a PhD in physics and ended up in the micro-electronics industry.

In my spare time, I'm the lead developer of Kasts, a convergent podcast player which is a part of KDE plasma gear. https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kasts

Also enjoys (guitar) music and into (very) amateur astronomy.

The first wave of tech made information free.
The second made attention scarce.
The third makes reality optional.

When we throw up our hands and say none of it matters, we're doing the fascists’ work for them. They don't need to hide their corruption if they can convince us it's pointless to look. They don't need to silence truth-tellers if we've already decided truth is meaningless.

It matters. I care.

Makes no sense that giving to charities is considered noble and praiseworthy, but creating a society that doesn't require charity is considered socialist and bad. πŸ€”

Updating talk slides so you all get to be horrified along with me at the current Starlink numbers.

There are now 7,652 Starlink satellites in orbit (>500 more than there were in February, when I last updated these particular slides).

2-3 Starlinks per day are burning up in the atmosphere. That's a lot of weird metal in the atmosphere (and undoubtedly lots of random bits getting to the ground too).

Starlink is a stupidly wasteful and dangerous way to use orbit.

Judging by my timeline there's another wave of GNOME hate?

Sigh. KDE user here, massively prefer KDE, and don't like GNOME. Don't like its visual and behavioural design, don't like its applications, don't like the lack of customisability, don't like having to rely on extensions that break all the time, etc.

But you know what? None of that means GNOME is bad. It just means GNOME is not for me. That's it. I know this will shock people, but it's entirely possible to not like GNOME without being a massive dick about it. Just use one of the countless other desktop environments. That's the beauty of choice.

Setting aside my personal preferences, GNOME is an absolutely excellent piece of software, and the people working on it should be damn proud of what they've built. Your aggressive, hateful rants from the peanut gallery just make you look like the total dickheads that you are.

People who moan about Europe not having a Google or Meta. Because of regulation and shit and because (of course) we in Europe don't like success.

It's always funny, because to me, the system is working. I don't want an unregulatable, too-big-to-fail hot mess of a company in Europe.

This may not be 100% intentional and I am not saying that EU regulations are without fault.

I just become increasingly suspicious of people who advocate for slashing them.

Do you have a huge book backlog? Do you avoid doing things just to read? Do you read just to avoid doing things? Bookrastinating is here for you.

Each time when I hear Tasmin Archer's Sleeping Satellite on the radio these days, I think of #GenAI. So, this had to happen, I guess. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Remarkably little of the text has to be changed!

Suggestions for improvement are welcome. Also, I would be surprised if I'm the first to try this, so do tell me if you saw similar/better attempts!

Windows 10 is dying, Windows 11 is not working, despite your device being completely fine..
But fear not, there is a potential solution to avoid buying new system.
