@stefan back in the late 90s I ran a chat site with 50k users. The host wanted extra $$$ because of the extra bandwidth I was using, though I kept outgoing html lean and mean. I made no $$$ and decided to shelve it.

I saw this story in the early days of the net..small guys get wiped out and rich bros come in and dominate and control the narrative .
The only idea I can think of besides donations is to offer an exclusive site where you charge for access.

@stefan I finally got it running. I'm not really sure why I'm doing this *lol*. I've got registrations turned off. Back in the late 90's I ran a chat site with 50K users and it was a beast to moderate and ate up all my time, so I still have PTSD over that experience. *ha*. right now , it's pretty zippy.. not bad for a $200 server and $100 worth of ssd.

@stefan I'm finding installation is not a walk in the park. Ningx instead of Apache, postgres instead of MySQL ..and then add in Ruby. Ughh

@rbreich social security was tolerable when revenues exceeded payments, so the government could use the excess and leave little ious in the fund. Now that SSI is cashing in those ious, all of a sudden we have a crisis.
The problem is that voters are too dumb to understand.

A co-worker on slack posted that mastodon was hard to use and that the exodus back to Twitter had begun.

In related news, this poster is incredibly frustrated that it's against the law to smack someone upside the head.

Gas stoves are 3x more efficient than electric stoves..same for hot water heaters, etc. Unless all electric comes from renewables (not even close), gas is the way to go. As for fumes, I guess in new construction it could be required to vent, like your boilers and hot water heaters do currently.
