We peaked at 400+ active users this month but then dropped as new user signups dried up coinciding with a sort order change on #joinMastodon
Interactions are up though as our active 40 - 60 users continue to follow more people and interact with the broader #fediverse
While I would love to see user growth, being small just means questions of how to pay for the instance are answered for now as I can foot the bill (donations appreciated)
Mike LiVolsi@stefan back in the late 90s I ran a chat site with 50k users. The host wanted extra $$$ because of the extra bandwidth I was using, though I kept outgoing html lean and mean. I made no $$$ and decided to shelve it.
I saw this story in the early days of the net..small guys get wiped out and rich bros come in and dominate and control the narrative .
The only idea I can think of besides donations is to offer an exclusive site where you charge for access.
@mlivolsi far as I can tell best bet is the archiveofourown path of forming a nonprofit / coop type setup.

There could be a future in which there are paid fediverse accounts for additional services, like pay for masto and get writefreely account on the same domain. Or Mobilizon.
The trick would be the add-ons themselves not costing so much that they hurt rather than help.
