DEFEND DRAG STORY HOUR IN NYC!

Help protect queer spaces and expression under threat from the far right!

The far right has placed a target on Drag Story Hours nationwide, and New York is no exception. A group of violent, loud bigots, who have repeatedly harassed and invaded these events in the city, is openly planning to disrupt the next Drag Story Hour, on Thursday, December 29, at the Jackson Heights Library in Queens.

Queer community members and allies will be there to show the fascists they are not welcome, but that kids and drag queens are.

Let's show NYC's unwavering support for Drag Story Hour and for queer and trans people, and make a safe, encouraging, and joyful welcome for kids and their grownups as they enter the library.

BE THERE:
Thursday 12/29 3pm
Jackson Heights Library
35-51 81st Street, Queens (7 train to 82nd Street)
3pm
Wear regular clothes and a mask
Bring rainbow swag, non-amplified noisemakers, musical instruments, joy, and love!

@workingclasshistory I unfortunately first learned about this in 8th grade, it was literally the first lesson in history class (and my teacher also went off on Lincoln). Apparently he was the only teacher willing in school to talk about it. It shouldn’t be this way - everyone needs to know about it. It is American history.
@contrapoints he seems miserable.
Please don’t forgot how magical you are because the world is trying to convince you otherwise. There is a reason why we’re made to feel powerless. If you believe that, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.
@littlebdog upper class women often wore it so…very much a class thing imho.
Depiction of a woman wearing a vizard, a mask used to prevent tanning. It was usually made out of velvet, with a string and bead attached to the mouthpiece. The wearer would place the bead in their mouth to hold the mask up.
(Note: Not to be confused with the moretta mask, which is very similar but worn for different purposes)

During Kristallnacht, Olga Loeb protected her son from Nazis by applying makeup to his face, claiming it was measles. Makeup (and his mother’s quick wits) probably saved his life.

Love to see Louis XVI really rocking that '80s make-up in this hand-coloured print ✨

Now seems like a good time to talk about how far-right extremists are using the Overton Window theory to force their ideas into the mainstream. The premise here is that today’s fringe ideas/beliefs can become tomorrow’s normal by shifting the boundaries of acceptable discourse. You do that by introducing people to more & more extreme ideas, so everything else seems reasonable in comparison.

eg, when “praising Hitler” becomes the comparison point, low-key bigotry suddenly doesn’t seem so bad. 1/

The rise in anti-Semitism makes it even MORE important we share its history and the real people affected by it. We need to show their faces, their lives, and their families. Their stories cannot be forgotten. #antisemitism #kanye #history
