@gikiski guess you’ll just “have” to buy some AirPods. That’s not intentional AT ALL…
@sqot @yuliyan @gruber very astute. You are what you eat. Isolation is the symptom of a much bigger societal issue.
@yuliyan @gruber I like the discussion. Here’s the thing: as people have freedom 2 choose, they choose isolation bec we’ve all been hurt by people, so 2 varying degrees we choose 2 protect ourselves fm people in isolating ways. I’ve spent a lot of time overseas in areas that r much less affluent than the US, & people are generally poorer, have fewer choices & more difficult lives, but are happier & closer to their families. The #visionpro being isolating will be a symptom not cause.
@techinterested @gadgetbond #apple is a good storyteller. I think they’re going to at least pique the interest of a portion of the market that #meta will leave untapped because they want people to leave their reality for a different one. Hard sell for most normals who find real life to be quite compelling on its own without any help from tech companies. Apple says “no, live your life, we’ll just join you and make it better.” We’ll see how well that holds up over time though.
@bobbakh America IS heading down that road, you’re right. It’s Christian Nationalism and it’s disgusting. Christians who faithfully follow Jesus believe that they’re citizens of Heaven first and America second. Christianity transcends nationality. Plenty of Americans don’t treat it that way but those of us who do find brothers and sisters in people from every nation. What’s been your experience with religion living in Iran, though?
@bobbakh brother, I hate to hear that. Here’s what I guarantee you: evil people in power will use their positions within ANY institution for evil purposes. People have done things in the name of God that the Bible explicitly condemns. The Bible itself is full of examples of this! It’s broken people living in a broken world doing broken things for broken reasons. But to ignore the ways in which the gospel has utterly transformed entire people groups who are faithful is is to miss something big.

@gadgetbond I don’t know that #visionpro has to bring anything new to the table to get off the ground. It just has to be made by Apple and people will eat it up, despite the naysayers. It takes all the stuff everyone loves about Apple…and makes it “real”. Sold. It’s a keystone example of the intersection between brand value and brand loyalty.

Besides, every new #apple product completely bombs before it wipes the floor with the competition within a few years’ time. Don’t hold your breath.

I’m no Luddite or naysayer, I think the #apple #visionpro is super cool…but did anyone else watch the keynote or product video and get some low key dystopian vibes? Especially the part where the dad is watching a video of his family, alone, in a dark room? Might be using the wrong words, I don’t know.

Maybe I’m just getting old. I think Apple nailed a first pass at this so well that I can ACTUALLY see how this could be pretty common in the next decade. Not totally sure how I feel about it.

@philheppenstall @arstechnica agreed. Hawking addressed some of this in A Brief History Of Time as well, I believe. Still fun to talk about though.
@bobbakh and let’s be honest. No one was built to believe in the utter hopelessness of nihilism. No one stares into the abyss and says “yeah, looks good.” I’m not suggesting believing in some therapeutic lie like the misrepresented and mis-characterized “God” a lot of atheists probably have in their heads as an alternative, either. I’m just saying, there’s more to the story.
And no one says you have to just drop your skepticism while you question that story either. Hang onto it, in fact.
