During production of Finding Nemo, we started using Linux boxes in addition to SGIs.
Why?

3D painting software we wrote for laying out coral was written in C++ using templates, and the debug info was too large for IRIX, but was debuggable on Linux.

Was this a 32 bit vs. 64 bit issue?

No.

IRIX reserved half the address space for the kernel, while Linux only did a quarter.

So on Linux, we had 3GB, and the symbols fit.

It was a 32 bit show, both machines had 4GB max.

Plenty for Finding Nemo.

This would’ve been my first time seeing Blade Runner on the big screen — the original theatrical cut. The superior Director’s Cut was still a few years away. What more is there to say? One of the greatest films ever made.

It’s difficult to overstate just how pumped me and my friends were for Batman in 1989. Just that teaser poster alone had us in giddy with excitement. Just as Roger Moore is my Bond, Keaton is my Batman. Looking back it’s all a bit patchy, but we didn’t care at the time.

It’s really all about the barbershop scenes, isn’t it. Rick Baker’s make-up and Eddie Murphy’s performances — the perfect combination. I’d have happily paid £2.50 just for that.

‘Dueling Banjos’
A silly thing I painted 11 years ago and apparently haven’t posted here before

Predator. The Lost Boys. RoboCop.
All within a month. What a time to be alive.

There’s nothing new to say about this one that hasn’t already been said. A stone-cold classic, and if anything it only gets better with age. Still sharp, still funny, still brutal.

If you’re a fan and haven’t seen RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop. It's essential viewing.

#3191 - Superstition
All our cultural items like the internet, music, movies etc would disappear tomorrow due to an IT crisis. Yet we can still see the work of some dude who used his finger to create art on a cave wall 4,000 years ago. I don't think we've come as far as we think we have.

The EU wants to stop feeding your DNS queries to Silicon Valley.

DNS4EU is the European Commission’s attempt to build a sovereign DNS resolver infrastructure that doesn’t route all your web lookups through the likes of Google, or Cloudflare.

DNS4EU aims to bring DNS resolution under EU oversight and privacy rules.

So, if you want 🇪🇺-backed ad-blocking and child protection, you may want to give it a try.
