So what do you do if this is happening and you keep being scapegoated?
1. Leave toxic people behind who refuse to work at a connection and understanding with you.
2. Build support systems and personal safe spaces - learn to how to set boundaries respectfully, listen to others so they feel heard, give and take equally, have empowering supportive relationships, etc. This can involve learning new coping strategies, new social skills and dealing with past trauma and learning how to listen and care about others more fully.
Have you ever struggled with people using you as a scapegoat? And then wondered why it keeps happening?
People claim it's because people scapegoat those who are pushovers or don't stand up for themselves, but this has nothing to do with it.
People become a target for scapegoating when they speak out about some injustice, speak about problems and situations everyone else ignores, or discuss ideas and experiences other people don't understand or agree with or that makes them uncomfortable. (ie talking about adding accessibility for the disabled, discussing a gay partner, etc)
Scapegoats are also choosen when they do not have social support within a group, either because they are a minority/outsider within the group or because they don't have the social skills to build such support systems and create empowering relationships (many autism spectrum folks fall into this category as well as those who have experienced trauma). #mentalheath #scapegoating #blame #shadowwork #mentalillness #selfhelp
"You can cure your migraines and cluster headaches with <a chiropractor|meditation|tumeric>"
It makes me want to stab someone in the face every time this is said. Just so they know how it feels to have severe headaches. Sorry but you cannot cure medical problems this way.
