At 8:32:21 a.m. in the early morning of May 18, 1980, a magnitude 5.1 #earthquake strikes 1 mile (1,6 km) below Mount St. #Helens, triggering one of the largest landslides ever witnessed by humans - followed by a gigantic lateral blast

OTD in 1980 Mt. St. Helens exploded in the largest landslide in recorded history. I heard it from 150 miles away, camping in the Three Sisters Wilderness.

Dick Lasher was on his way to Spirit Lake on Mt. St. Helens, in his red Pinto with a motorcycle hitched to the back. Had he made it, or even gotten over the next ridge, he would have died in the heat & ash. His story is nothing short of astounding, including his arrest by helicopter the next day. Read the story.
