I suspect LLMs reinforce the Gell-Mann amnesia effect. Experts who query LLMs about their fields of expertise will *quickly* realize how wrong their output can be, how quick they are to confabulate, and how eager they are to confirm one’s biases. Sometimes, replying “No, that’s wrong, try again” can cause an LLM to generate a completely different—and often opposite—answer to the same query, which makes no sense if the LLM had *actually* worked out an independently coherent answer.

Asking an LLM to comment about a subject you know nothing about—or worse, know a little bit about—is a psychologically dangerous activity. Not only will it confirm your biases, it will do so in a way that *appears* to be objective and independent, using fallacies that lie just beyond your ability to discern. At best, you will be misled. At worst, you will begin spiraling down a path of conspiracy thinking.

Be extremely suspicious of answers that are especially satisfying; you might have just gaslit yourself.

Big news for Mastodon GmbH. They have formally joined forces with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

If you’re not in the design/tech world, trust me when I say this is a big step for the fediverse. The W3C establishes the standards used for the internet.

This is a solid path forward for small tech.

I often get accused of bashing on Windows too much, but to be fair I bash on linux all the time.

We are aware of recent reports regarding targeted phishing attacks that have resulted in account takeovers of some Signal users, including government officials and journalists. We take this very seriously.

To be clear: Signal’s encryption and infrastructure have not been compromised and remain robust. These attacks were executed via sophisticated phishing campaigns, designed to trick users into sharing information – SMS codes and/or Signal PIN – to gain access to users’ accounts.

I think it's pretty telling that after stealing the entirety of the world's Open Source Software to train their models, *none* of the AI code tool companies offer discounted or free plans to OSS projects. Just another slap in the face from the biggest OSS pirates in history. Guess I won't be able to use them to support our users without some generous donations.

So, you want me to code in a language that has no formal specification, no test suite, that changes continuously, where builds are not reproducible, where results depend on a hidden state in a build cache that can't be backed up, where I have to pay for each compilation, where I have to continuously send a copy of my code to a third party, and that might disappear with no notice?

Geee, vibe coding looks FUN!

When your password leaks:
→ Change your password
→ Problem solved

When your biometric data leaks:
→ You can't change your face
→ You can't change your fingerprints
→ The compromise is permanent
→ Your biometric data is in breach databases forever

This is why facial recognition for age verification is dangerous.
