Some basics of social media #accessibility that are useful for pretty much all platforms:
- capitalize each word in multi-word hashtags
- add alt text to your images. Actually describe the image; don't just use the space for jokes or Easter eggs
- don't overuse emojis (the screen reader reads each one)
- if you create videos, caption them
- if you share a video that doesn't have captions, provide a description

We just set up an instance for Trans Safety Network last night
@chican3ry and @jess are set up publishing on our work monitoring transphobic hate and organised harm so far.
In recent years, we became too comfortable letting #Twitter define journalism & media. Algorithms often dictated the narratives we collectively paid attention to.
Absurd trends were covered by news outlets & ballooned into major stories while we missed so much real substance. And the quick takes of uninformed politicians & bad actors were forced upon anyone participating in the network.
It was bad for democracy. The #Mastodon model makes me hopeful we can do better. #twittermigration

I don’t understand how to find people to follow. Having followers not such a big deal with me. The Search facility hasn’t turned up a single result for me, and there’s been no reaction to any of my toots. I love the concept though, I shall persevere.
The migration from Twitter to Mastodon is a blueprint for what I hope to see in regards to parallel institutions.
Namely, capitalist structures & billionaire overlords over-colonize so much that they cannibalize themselves & the things they own, compelling people to look for alternatives.
But alternatives like this were here, ready to catch people as they happens.
Same can be true for mutual aid systems, tool libraries, community distribution networks etc, as dominant systems further crumble.
