@tootleapp

I don’t understand how to find people to follow. Having followers not such a big deal with me. The Search facility hasn’t turned up a single result for me, and there’s been no reaction to any of my toots. I love the concept though, I shall persevere.

@maryeffrancis @tootleapp Have you tried the profile directory? 🙂
@dajbelshaw @tootleapp Brand new to this. No idea where that is, or where. Is there an ‘idiot’s guide’ anywhere? Even explaining basic terms like’instance’ ? Ignorance of that term held me up for half a day. Got there in the end through luck and process of elimination!

@maryeffrancis @tootleapp Here's a beginner's guide from last year that may help? 🙂

How to Move From Twitter to Mastodon

There are many similarities between the two—except that Mastodon feels like a nice place to be.

@maryeffrancis @dajbelshaw @tootleapp For me it is useful to take a peek at the local and federated timelines (pretty fast and strange ant times!). If there is something that catches my eye I follow or respond or check other toots of the account that posted it.

The big thing that is missing from that guide is that there is much more to this network than Mastodon. A lot of people use Mastodon, so it is the "elephant in the room", but there are are between 50-100 completely different software projects attached to our federated universe (or "fediverse"). Some of these have years of history and evolution going back long before Mastodon came along. Some are simple, many are works in progress, and some are quite advanced. Each has a different purpose and a different code of ethics and guiding principles.

There is quite a lot to explore.

@spider @maryeffrancis Well, indeed.

(BTW I saw your reply on my home feed by chance, as whatever client you're using referenced me as '@Doug Belshaw' instead of @dajbelshaw. Didn't appear in my notifications.)

@maryeffrancis Strange that the search doesn't work...

Sometimes looking at tags can be a way of finding people you're interested in following.

E.g. from your profile description, you might find interesting things on the following tags:

#socialism
#pacifism
#poetry

@maryeffrancis regularly checking out the #introduction and #introductions hashtag timelines and looking at the profiles of people whose introductory post mentions topics that interest you, can definitely help to discover new people to follow.
Likewise, it's usually a good thing to post your own as well, and include hashtags for your interests/stuff you'll be posting about, and pin this to your profile.
Finally, pinning hashtag searches for topics you are interested in, will help find content.
@maryeffrancis can I recommend following @vfrmedia As well as his own toots, which i enjoy, Alex is one of the most prolific boosters on my timeline. He boosts a wide variety of different people. I've found loads of people from following him. (Thanks Alex)
