Now it's true that Threads gets users to critical mass immediately thanks to Instagram & FB. The *real* lesson there is not that their power wins but that portability of one's own social graph is vital and we must insist on it.
Had a look at Threads. It's bombarding you with posts from people you don't follow, with no other opportunity to curate other than to mute them (or maybe I'm missing something). Similar to For You on birdsite but with no other option. No thanks (assuming I'm right).
So after giving $3 million to his wife's already wealthy US College, in order to buy them a state-of-the-art computing lab named after him, Rishi Sunak gives a £10 raffle prize to his local state primary still struggling to replace 15-year-old computers https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/rishi-sunak-gives-10-wine-30367843

Turns out the existence of an "alpha" wolf is a myth.

It was based on old/bad experiments, conducted when unrelated wolves were thrown together in captivity.

In actual wild wolves, packs are just families. There's no dominant alpha battling for the top spot -- and in the rare cases there is, it's an alpha *female* wolf.

Insert obvious implications for the use of this term in human societies.

Is the Alpha Wolf Idea a Myth?

The idea that wolf packs are led by a merciless dictator, or alpha wolf, comes from old studies of captive wolves. In the wild, wolf packs are simply families

Saying not to bother with the favourite button on mastodon because it doesn't affect any algorithm is like saying not to say thank you to someone because no one else will hear.

Stop thinking in those old social media ways of engagement and visibility and algorithms and reach and audience and start thinking about being social.

And BOOST! It's how you saw this, probably!

A favourite is a nice thanks, a boost lets everyone else discover the great thing you discovered too!

« Egress fees », ou frais de sortie sur le marché Cloud : Un outil puissant de verrouillage

"Une étude a montré qu’il était compliqué pour les utilisateurs de passer d’un service cloud à un autre, en raison de frais de sortie élevés imposés par les leaders du marché. Ces coûts excessifs représentent un obstacle important à l’émergence d’une concurrence saine et équitable, et par conséquent à l’innovation"

just reran #debirdify - last time I ran it, it was ~47 accounts (the approximation is due to some people having multiple mastodon accounts. It's now 35. Which means, I think, that Musk's anticompetitive threats to people publicising mastodon accounts in their profile did have an effect, despite being subsequently withdrawn.

“At Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk was a jerk with a grand vision. At Twitter, he's just a jerk”.

Elon Musk was always a visionary jerk, bad boss at SpaceX, Tesla. But it won't work at Twitter.

Elon Musk has used the same playbook at all of his companies from Tesla to SpaceX. Sadly for him, his model will cause Twitter to go down in flames.
