Okay Canadian people, so if, IF I was going to spend 3-4 weeks in Canada next year, what would you recommend? I’m not into large amounts of snow, love nature, am (& hopefully still will be) fit enough for roughly 10km of not too challenging walking each day, like history, culture, food & wine etc. I wouldn’t want to be cramming in as much as I possibly can in that time frame, & don’t have to see every major tourist attraction. What are your favourite places & why?

A lot of people have heard of Uluṟu/Ayers Rock in central Australia, but having visited the region on 7 school camps, I can honestly say that it isn’t my favourite destination in that area. Too many people fly in for Uluṟu & fly out again, missing my favourite parts.

“Temu Trump” is actually pretty good. Has staying power, it’ll stick with him if he’s still around after May 3rd.
@CartyBoston @fixatedpersonsunit I read it as Trump trying to save face.

Trump increased tariffs on China to an absurd degree, expecting a phone call from Wang Yi, offering a pile of cash paid through a Caribbean island holding company and a shiny new Trump Tower in Guandong.

But no call came.

All the Billy Bobs in Arkansas are noticing the cheap crap from China in the local Walmart suddenly costs 150% more.

Trump can't unilaterally walk away from the tariff taxes.

But he promised tariff wars are quick and easy to win.

So he did what a narcissist does in the circumstances.

Hd lied.

China totes called. Top secret negotiations. Nothing to worry about guys. The genius plan is working.

Meanwhile, over in China, where they remember the Opium Wars and the Century of Humiliation is part of the national curriculum, there will be no calls.

It's the international relations version of the skeezy guy insisting the girl he gave his number out to in the nightclub totally called him back and is interested in him.

There was no call.

There never will be.

Everything Macron does here is calculated. It's the difference between leaving no tip and leaving a nickel as a tip—the latter is a no-ambiguity message, "This wasn't oversight, it was a deliberate choice"

And it's not just that Macron doesn't shake Trump's hand, it's that his hand moves to Zelenskyy's back after letting Trump hang in midair

The contrast between his admiration for one man and contempt for the other couldn't be clearer

Active Transportation, defined: "Walking, biking, scooting, and other low-carbon ways to arrive at a meeting to discuss why it’s too hard to walk or bike anywhere."

Need a laugh?

Here's a glossary for disillusioned urban planners who have sat thru one too many NIMBY-dominated public meetings.

Summary

Today at 12:38, Spain, Portugal and the south of France experienced a total power outage when 14 GW dropped off the grid.

Grid separation successfully saved the rest of the joint EU network.

REN, the network operator, is executing a disaster recovery program, and expects power to be back in 6-10 hours. The cabinet is currently in a crisis meeting, and the various local followup incidents are being managed. People improvise.

If you are well, take a break, stay at home, in the shade, hydrate and read a book. Do not call emergency services for information.

Possible trigger was a fire on Alaric Mountain in France, where a high-voltage power line was damaged between Perpignan and eastern Narbonne affecting an already stressed Spanish grid.

Hackerterrorcybercyber is being investigated, but seems increasingly unlikely.

I've got a quick favour to ask. If you're reading this post on Mastodon (or the Fediverse), please click boost.

How come?

I recently moved across to my own self-hosted single-user server (using GoToSocial.org). For a bunch of reasons, including visibility across the Fedi, it would really help out.

I need to be very clear, that the push towards "vibe coding" - that is, deliberately deskilling people - is because AI code assistants are an (increasingly expensive) subscription service.

If you know how to code, you can just write Python, C, Java, R, PHP, whatever for free and make things. You may not own the tools of production, but at least you're not renting them.

If you have been deskilled so you only know how to vibe code, you will be paying for that privilege forever.

This also goes, by the way, for researchers who are starting to be convinced they don't need to learn how to be scientists anymore, because "the AI" can just do the science for them. Nope.
