Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, CEO of UKRI speaking at the Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council about how reform of #ResearchAssessment strenghtens sustainable research:

Obsession with papers (and where we publish papers) means we forget the most important thing in the research system - the people. If we focus only on the new knowledge and not the people who create that knowledge, we undermine the arguments for public investment in research.

Today at the Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council in Interlaken, discussing #research software and international cooperation with @danielskatz, Michelle Barker from @researchsoft, and Florian Mannseicher from @dfg_public. Slides: https://tinyurl.com/GRC-software

Here we are at the GRC meeting: me, @mariacruz from NWO, Michelle Barker from @researchsoft, and Florian Mannseicher from @dfg_public - and the Interlaken Congress Center (which appears to usually be a casino)
I’m getting ready to talk about #ResearchSoftware later today at the Global Research Council, with Michelle Barker from @researchsoft, Florian Mannseicher from @dfg_public, and @mariacruz from NWO

*codecheck = code review to see if your code can run on another persons machine and if it will produce the same output as on your machine. Codecheck is open to work at the preprint stage or even pre-publication stage (if all materials are already available/ can be shared for the process)

**Engineering: very broadly defined, medical technologies, aero space, civil engineering, acoustics, robotics - engineering is everywhere

Are you working in engineering science**?
Do you have a paper with (open/shareable) associated code and data that you would like to have codechecked * ?

You can still submit work to the codecheck event on 30 May in Delft!
The deadline is 30 April, submission is a quick email to codechecknl@gmail.com
away.

We're diving into the unconference part of #NRSD2024! We have 14 pitches of people that want to lead a session.
We have pitches on art, hiring people with software skills, sharing software, ensuring #RSE careers remain attractive, reproducible software, software maintenance, #Ghost collective on collaborative game making, training, research software impact model, NL-RSE, best practice check lists, declarative programming, and prototype designs!

This one minute timer is magic ✨

Rogier highlighting how the #OpenScience fund in the Netherlands is a great start, but it is also not a lot of funding compared with other programmes that NWO funds, and it is not covering maintenance costs in the future after the project ends.

Rogier highlighting that dedicating time on #OpenSource software is easier to do as a white male, with picture from the blog here; https://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/05/15/straight-white-male-the-lowest-difficulty-setting-there-is/
