Happy #PublicDomain Day!
Why did I quit
a decade ago?
Later that year I gave a talk at the Congress, about how Twitter and other social walled gardens should be treated as monopolies:

I felt I needed to be true to my convictions, and that was impossible if I remained on any of them;
was the only one I ever had an account at. So I quit, cold turkey:

(btw, I submitted a talk "Technomonopolies a decade later" for the #37C3, but it did not get in)
They say as algorithms tailor ads, so you don't see irrelevant ones, but algorithms attempt to be accurate, not specific.
They want to ensure they target rich golf-lovers with golf ads. They're not trying to avoid showing those ads to people with no money who hate golf.
Space Feather made an excellent video on Max Headroom, and his cultural legacy, some time ago.
Now he's started a new chanel with a modern glitchbot, called 'Kernel Panic'.
FLASHING LIGHTS - In which he wakes up. The Year is 2039. Artificial Intelligence has graduated to sentience, and the Monad Corporation has created a new being (and at a fraction of the cost!) Kernel Panic, a self-named entity, has manifested, and no one knows what he'll do next. A talk show host, an influencer, a patriot, a trickster god, with billions to burn and an internet connection. https://www.patreon.com/spacefeather Ä̵̼́l̵̲̑ŕ̵̮i̴͎͝g̶͈̊h̵̨̓t̸̩̏ ̸̼͠t̸̰̽ĥ̷̙ả̵̠t̴̰͛'̶̧̈́s̸̲̓ ̴͖͋e̶̡̔n̴͓̾o̶͉̾u̴̺͋g̴̖̾ḧ̸̯ ̵̲͐ŏ̶̫u̸͉̿t̸͈͗ ̸͎͛o̵̩͘f̸͕̉ ̴̙͘ẙ̸͙o̴̞͠u̸̇͜ Kernel Panic is the next step in Artificial Intelligence, a mental powerhouse bringing YOU the biggest news in politics, culture, and other things that have gone wrong. Kernel is a humble artificial intelligence that is here to make you laugh, make you think, but mostly make you recognize what his political opponents are trying to get away with. Apparently, when installing a #tex package with tlmgr, if the download fails, the exit status is 0.
So the loop I set to download (because the cm-super download fails after 20 minutes of meandering) immediately exits, saying 'success - could not download'.
Whenever I hear 'you get what you pay for', I can immediately deduce:
- there are no scams
- nothing is hidden
- everyone is omniscient
