@jaycie Yes. I think Agile is not a silver bullet. You can still do bad things with Agile, just as with any other methodology. (And sorry, I think I missed some of your previous toots, and maybe that's why I'm not sure why you write about the "current state of things").

@jaycie It's different if you work on a project in your free time, but we all have only 24h/day and have to eat. We could get money from other sources, decoupled from our work results: basic income, or some sort of "patreon for IT". But anyway I don't think it's a good idea to give programmers the right to say "we won't do it" and that's it. Too risky. When they join a project they should agree that sometimes they will have to do things they're not very happy about.

@jaycie It is not up to them to decline. They can inform the manager or Scrum master that they're not happy with it and she can discuss it with the people making decisions, so maybe they'll change their mind, but all in all of the company wants the feature and pays for it, the programmers are bound to implement it.

@fernweh Do you know Con Iggulden's "The Conqueror" series? I highly recommend it. It's four thick novels about Genghis and Kublai. Quite accurate historically, and at the end of every book the author explains what changes he made.

"Er macht ein Gesicht wie drei Tage Regenwetter" = "he has [lit. he makes] a face like three days of rain". Meaning, he's sad :D
s, Gesicht, er = a face.
sie hat sein wahres Gesicht gezeigt = she showed her true face.
wahr = true
nicht waht? = isn't it?
wahren = to keep
er hat sein Gesicht gewahrt/verloren = he kept/lost his face.
verlieren = to lose

annehmen = to accept, to assume, to take. One of those jackass verbs with a preposition.
Ich nehme an, die Untersuchung wird nicht lange dauern = I assume (I take it) that the exam will not last long.
Die Vereinigung der beiden Länden wurde gut angenommen = The unification of both countries was received well.
angenommen is the past participle here, an - (ge) - nehmen.
dauern = to last, to take time
beiden = both

Wire is an end-to-end encrypted messenger. I work there as an #Android/#Scala dev. In the talk I explain the architecture and how we use Scala to make the code cleaner and the app more robust.

Reißaus nehmen - to get/run away; lit. to take a tear, as if someone held you by your clothes and you had to tear them to free yourself.
etwas reißen - to tear something
Er hat mich ein Loch in die Hose gerissen - he tore a hole in my pants.

@thelovebing @ordbajsarn I speak Polish and English, and my French in on the B2 level . Started German half a year ago. I think that when people say they're fluent, they mean very different things. I can have a casual conversation in French, but it's lmuch worse than my English. I cna say I'm fluent in English, but it's still much worse than my Polish. I don't think a language is something you can learn 100% and then stop learning.
