"Self-hosting is not an option for most people, you elitist nerd"
Yeah well neither is a gym membership or home-cooking your own healthy meals. Doesn't mean we shouldn't encourage people to do it if they can.
Capitalism isn't freedom. It isn't trade. It isn't competition. It isn't the rule of law. It isn't markets. It isn't the absence of a centrally-planned economy. It sure as fuck isn't democracy.
Capitalism is capital being in charge. It is the organization of society around the interests of capital, which are further consolidation and the generation of profits.
Anything positive you associate with capitalism is an accident of history.
OK I installed iOS 26 on my phone. I’ve concluded that the Liquid Glass idea is fundamentally impossible to get right, because the aesthetic ambitions are directly opposed to the functionality of the interface.
You can’t make elevated UI elements nearly transparent, while also keeping them readable on top of background content that can have any combination of colors.
The only way to solve this is to not do this—the UI just has to be more opaque.
@nyhan So, I have been slowly and reluctantly coming to the conclusion that LLMs are the One Ring:
• They are seductive by appealing to a person's best nature
• By convincing the user that what they most ardently desire is almost within their grasp and they are right and good to want it and deserving of having it, they slowly turn the user into Gollum
• They are probably feeding everything the user whispers to it right on to the evil guy on the back end of a Palantir
