8-bit micros, especially the Speccy and the Beeb, but not prejudiced! Also occasional Linux, Raspberry Pi and Arduino stuff.

For non-retro-computer stuff follow my other account at @losttourist

Not for any particular reason other than "cat", here's our Luther in an uncharacteristically majestic looking pose. #CatsOfMastodon

Are #Pimoroni here on Fedi? Their website's cert has expired.

Having just re-found it at the bottom of a drawer, this remains one of my favourite non-fiction books.

It's educational, informative, and entertaining (hey, it sounds like the BBC!) and an absolute must-read for anyone who wants to know where UNIX came from, how the C language came about, why both of those things are structured the way they are, and loads of interesting titbits about some of the giants of computer science such as Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie.

I don't think the book has ever been officially published in the UK so it can be a bit hard to get hold of over here. It's definitely worth it if you can find a copy, though.

Turing Tumble is a marble-powered Turing-complete physical computer.

It's being marketed as an educational toy and has apparently been out for a couple of years but I've only just heard of it. I fall comfortably (very comfortably) into its "Age 8 years and up" target group, so I think I know what I'll be asking Santa to bring me for Christmas this year! #TuringTumble

Turing Tumble - Build Marble-Powered Computers

Turing Tumble is a revolutionary new game where players build marble-powered computers to solve logic puzzles. It’s fun, addicting, and while you’re at it, you discover how computers work.

I thought I had a picture of my bedroom wall with the Crash! covers on them, unfortunately I think I misremembered but I did find this glorious picture of my bedroom from Christmas 1985.

I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry. Whichever, this definitely made me wince.

Found on /r/arduino.

Oh dear, random recruitment person who sent me this on #Linkedin.

While the second paragraph of this role is right up my street, you really couldn't have done anything more to put me off this company than what you wrote in the first paragraph.

Oh #Python, who on earth told you this was a good idea?

To be clear this means that

os.path.join("foo/", "bar", "/wibble")

simply returns "/wibble"

We've been spending this bank holiday monday out and about in the midlands. We ended up this afternoon in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, a town I've never been to before but which would have been a place of pilgrimage for me as a teenager as it was the origin of some of the greatest #ZXSpectrum games ever created.
