“DRAIN THE SWAMP” was only half the slogan. The rest was “..AND FILL IT WITH EVEN WORSE CREATURES”.

I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.

People often avoid making small positive changes because they get caught up in trying to go all the way. For example, “I could never go vegan. I love bacon too much”.

So then go vegan plus bacon. Or vegetarian plus bacon. Or just switch to oat milk and eat more vegetables. Whatever small change you can make is good

As we consider new year resolutions, it’s good to remember that the best ones challenge you to be a better person instead of needing external validation. Focus on what you can control.

Choose to write more instead of get more followers. Choose to learn new skills at work instead of get a promotion. Choose to improve your mental and physical health over finding a romantic partner.

Do these and the other things tend to follow.

This can be very dangerous for people who think "I don't really ever need to talk to anyone about my feelings."

This isn't true, it's just their needs are minimal.

"Feeling down."
"ya"

That's two letters but getting such a response can make you feel so much better. It represents someone, should things get worse, who might come over and help you.

A chatbot can say "ya" too. But, it doesn't make you feel better... **unless** you think it's a person. That's the danger.

I worry about young and ambitious people I know who bring a kind of perfectionism to having kids— when it’s just one of the many ways to rejoice in being a living creature in the world.

I worry that since there isn’t reason to talk about people’s personal choices outside of very crazy right wing spaces you don’t hear anything but some depressing calculations about “the carbon footprint of having kids”

Isn’t that who we were saving up all the other carbon for?

I think we should treat people who get scammed and come out and talk about it like heroes. And this is important: no matter how "obvious" the scam might seem in retrospect or from the outside of the community it prey'd on.

The more I look at scams the more I think this is major factor in how they keep going and keep coming back.

Listening to my husband calling out a play-by-play as he attempts to cancel our Microsoft Office subscription. (We’ve switched to free, open source LibreOffice). “They’re not making this easy!” he yells to me.

First, they tell him what a terrible mistake he’s making by listing all the services we’ll be losing. Like the AI we don’t want, and the OneDrive that we don’t use and have to actively fight Office to prevent it from storing stuff there.

Next, they beg by offering a lower price without the AI features — which means they are aware that those features are unpopular.

Finally, after much scrolling, there is the button that does the job. And we’re free!

Then it whines “but whyyyyy?”

It’s like breaking up with a toxic partner.

LLM people think I'm hurting for story ideas. That's never the problem. I have lots of ideas. I know these stories better than my own flesh and blood body. It's coming up with an angle, plotting, time, energy, and creativity to write that's the problem. I don't need "AI". I need UBI.

People who moan about Europe not having a Google or Meta. Because of regulation and shit and because (of course) we in Europe don't like success.

It's always funny, because to me, the system is working. I don't want an unregulatable, too-big-to-fail hot mess of a company in Europe.

This may not be 100% intentional and I am not saying that EU regulations are without fault.

I just become increasingly suspicious of people who advocate for slashing them.
