this graph is interesting - it's the buildup of heat in the ocean in zettajoules.
what is a zetajoule (ZJ)?
- Human annual world energy consumption is only half a ZJ
- The energy to warm the Earth's atmosphere by 1°C is approximately 2.2 ZJ.
Since the 80's the ocean has absorbed around 220 zettajoules - enough to heat the atmosphere by 100°C if it wasn't otherwise absorbed by the ocean
Warming up to Mastodon - so far it's good and improving. Also, good luck to everyone in the US on the midterms!
Also, I do AI art sometimes, and am into #climate
Global mean sea surface temperature anomalies (departure from average) so far this year ➡️ still 6th highest on record (despite La Niña-like conditions) 📈
[Data from https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/extended-reconstructed-sst]
The Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature (ERSST) dataset is a global monthly analysis of SST data derived from the International Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Dataset (ICOADS). The dataset can be used for long-term global and basin-wide studies and incorporates smoothed local and short-term variations.
Brilliant way to combine solar and farming
The sun gives off an enormous 400 yottajoules of energy each second
If all this energy were somehow concentrated to earth (instead dissipating into space), it would be enough to bring all ocean water on earth to above boiling temperature in about 1.4 seconds
