“I want news organizations to not only set up their own servers but also to start adding share-on-Mastodon buttons to story pages. That will send a message to Elon et al, endorsing an alternative.” — @jeffjarvis https://buzzmachine.com/2022/11/05/hope-for-a-post-musk-net/
Hope for a post-Musk net — BuzzMachine

Maybe we’ll look back and see that Elon Musk did us, the civilized citizens of the net, a favor by forcing us off our cozy if centralized, corporatized,...

I won't send Musk $8 but I'm willing to support the efforts here to build and expand the community.
Are there ways to contribute??

There's been some talk recently about an upsurge in cholera cases worldwide. 2022 data aren't fully available yet, but here's a graph of global cholera cases over the last 30 years. The big surge here is almost entirely due to cases in Yemen (shown here in red) resulting from the massive destruction of their civilian water and sanitation infrastructure by the Saudis in the recent war. (Data from the WHO Global Health Observatory, plotted by me.)
For context, this is one of my favorite climate graphs, showing 800,000 years of atmospheric CO2, including the massive run-up over the past century. We're now around 420 parts per million (ppm), more than anytime in 800,000 years (actually more than anytime in the past 5 million years) and completely outside the natural ups and downs in the record. This is the driver of the current #climate crisis.

The ugly story of how corporate America convinced us to spend so much on water
We’re being packaged and sold a bottle/can/box of lies on water.

Bottled water, boxed water, and the scam of selling a natural resource

Companies have managed to turn a natural resource into a pricy commodity thanks to marketing efforts, consumer convenience, and mistrust in tap water.

It's #EnvConflictDay, the UN day calling attention to the environmental dimensions of armed conflicts.
Here's my new piece from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists on the role of #water in the Ukraine war.

I thought throwing soup on a protected painting to protest fossil fuels was a bad idea, but will this get as much attention from the media and public?

“🚨 BREAKING: Hundreds of activists are PHYSICALLY STOPPING mega-polluting private jets from taking off from Amsterdam's main airport, @Schiphol. "We want fewer flights, more trains and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets". Who can disagree with that?”

This storm, one of the latest large storm ever recorded in the North Atlantic, extends from northern Canada almost all the way to the British Isles.
