Exciting personal update!! I am thrilled to share that I defended my PhD ๐ŸŽ“ ๐Ÿฅณ

Next steps: I recently started a new position at the Allen Institute for AI as a Young Investigator.

Excited to work with Yejin Choi and the Mosaic team at AI2, as well as to join the vibrant #NLP community in Seattle. Please DM me if you are here, and would like to chat about things research-related or otherwise! ๐Ÿ—ปโœจโ˜•๏ธ

For full transparency: currently I am the person most in charge as an admin and mod of Sigmoid.

This is mostly because others on the gradient team are more focused on other stuff we do - I do run any major decisions by them, however.

But, if I do something wrong and the community calls for it, I'll happily give up admin access and let others step in.

Sigmoid is funded by the community, so we have both a moral and practical reason to do right by this community.

Always open to feedback โ™ฅ๏ธ

@nsaphra @tealcows Ooh good to know! Absent evidence that it's harmful, I'd love this to be added to Sigmoid
I posted a thread on twitter about what I enjoy about mastodon, but I thought that maybe people on mastodon would also like hearing what I'm enjoying! So I'm reposting it here. ๐Ÿงต

I am interested in following all the #NLP #NLProc people on here!!

If I follow you on Twitter but not here (or if you work on anything #NLProc adjacent), please ping me and let me know you've switched!

Hi! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I am Abhilasha, a PhD student at #CMU. I like to talk about Natural Language Processing (#NLProc) and Machine Learning (#ML). I work on problems in model evaluation, with a focus on making NLP systems more interpretable and robust.

Happy to try and figure out Mastadon together!

I am on the job market (faculty, postdoc, and industry)! I work on helping ppl communicate with machines, using language to improve AI agents, and examining how people communicate and reason. I'm looking for roles at the intersection of #NLP #ComputationalLinguistics and #AI

I will be at #EMNLP2022: please reach out to chat IRL or digitally!

an update. After 15 years in industry, I'll be joining CMU Language Technologies Institute in Fall 2023. My research will continue to include the design and evaluation of search and recommender systems, their broader impacts (esp in culture industries like music), IR-enhanced ML, and tip of the tongue IR.

I'll be accepting students this cycle and, if you are a considering LTI and working with me specifically, mention me in your statement of purpose. Please no email.

#introduction

I'm Jelle Zuidema (a.k.a. Willem in my publications).

I do research on (& have opinions about) #NLProc, deep learning, #interpretability, bias, brain encoding/decoding models, & #EvolutionOfLanguage. Lucky to work with some wonderful PhD and MSc students on these topics.

I teach in the MSc Artificial Intelligence, Brain & Cognitive Sciences and the BSc Psychobiology at the U. of Amsterdam (#UvA).

Both excited abt recent progress in AI, & sometimes worried: #responsibleAI #xai

There's a lot of great advice on how to write a good SOP for (CS/NLP/ML) PhD applications out there, but how do you translate this to writing an actual statement? I try to show how I did this in a new blog post: https://saujasv.github.io/annotated-sop

Hope applicants find this useful!
