We need Covid-19 mandates
A recent poll suggested as many as two-thirds of Australians think the pandemic is over. This is far from true. A false impression has been created, as a result of poor messaging by governments and health officials and the progressive relaxation of key health protections – mask-wearing in public places and on public transport, the requirement to isolate when infectious, and PCR testing. So the recent blowouts in case numbers have caught many by surprise. This situation was mostly initiated by another example of Scott Morrison’s self-absorbed, delusional behaviour. The former prime minister sought political advantage by rushing to ease restrictions before last Christmas, hoping the benefit would extend through to the May election. He claimed a desire to “restore freedoms” to many Australians who had endured the period of lockdowns and other economic restrictions that were a part of the early response to the pandemic. This was irresponsible and ignored the overwhelming domestic and global evidence of the infectiousness of Covid-19 and its evolving variants, and the risks of long Covid. Moreover, excess deaths are at “a level such that Australia’s cumulative COVID death rate in 2022, as at the end of October, exceeds most of its OECD peers”.
