Seismic History: A Look Back October 2023

And now a fourth shallow M6.3 #earthquake in western #Afghanistan with a similar mechanism, a bit to the East of the previous three. I cannot remember ever seeing a sequence like this one.

The Taupō eruption was one of the largest volcanic eruptions known to have occurred in the past 5,000 years. But exactly when the eruption happened has long been debated by geologists.
An ash layer discovered in ice layers from West Antarctica pins down the likely timing of the eruption in late summer/early autumn in the year 232.

SCE Completes Seismic Retrofit of the Grid’s ‘Backbone’

The 5.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Ojai during Hurricane Hilary in August, also known as #Hurriquake, was an excellent reminder to always be prepared. ...

Would you like to hear about increasing #seismic #resilience of lifeline #infrastructure - especially for the electric power grid? I’ll be giving an invited talk tomorrow to the California Seismic Safety Commission @CAseismic (CalOES) on a ‘common sense strategy’ on this topic starting at 9:50 - here is the info, including virtual option - https://ssc.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2023/10/FINAL-October_12th_2023_Seismic_Safety_Commission_Meeting_Agenda_v5.pdf

How to Leave X

Some of the best tips I've seen for transitioning to Mastodon.

Don't delete your X account; instead go Mastodon-first, meaning:
1. Open Mastodon before X
2. Post new content to Mastodon before X
3. Engage replies on Mastodon before X
4. Keep using X but as a lurker; reply less, follow less.
5. Post teasers on X ("My thoughts on ABC are posted on Mastodon. Username in bio.")
6. Occasionally post on X that you're now on Mastodon, otherwise your absence is less noticed.

Updated seismicity map of the #earthquake sequence in #Afghanistan (in purple) with the two main M6.3 events, both shallow thrust events, located close to the city of Herat. This region is historically relatively low in #seismicity.
The death toll has been reported to be over 2000.
