Seismicity map of the region of the M6.0 #earthquake in Afghanistan that occurred yesterday. This event was a shallow reverse event, and has caused many fatalities. Numerous remote villages have been reported to have been heavily damaged, but are difficult to reach.
The M6.1 shallow #earthquake near Bigadic, Turkey, occurred on a normal fault system, possibly the Sindirgi-Sincanli Fault Zone. A similar event occurred near Simav in 2011 and generated significant damage around the epicenter.
Update on the #Rialto #earthquake sequence in California. Based on the alignment of the events, it now appears that they are occurring on a right lateral strike slip fault aligned with the San Jacinto Fault System. Two other little current sequences: near Lytle Creek to the North & Ontario South.
A quick map of the #aftershocks of the M8.8 #Kamchatka #earthquake. Aftershocks within the plate (outer rise and deeper intraplate) appear to occur mostly near the large slip patch of the mainshock. More numerous small aftershocks near the epicenter of the mainshock (where the rupture started).
The aftershock zone of today’s M8.8 #kamchatka megathrust #earthquake is comparable to the rupture area of the 1952 rupture zone from Macinnes et al. (2010). At a rate of 8 cm/year, the accumulated slip of 6 m since 1952 matches with the preliminary rupture model of today’s earthquake. #geoscience #seismology #geology #science
The first #tsunami waves from the M8.8 Kamchatka megathrust #earthquake arriving at the Crescent City CA tide gauge were not the highest, as seen on this plot (this is not uncommon, so do not return to a coast line too quickly!).
Today's M8.8 #kamchatka megathrust #earthquake on first glance appears similar to the 1952 event in location and size. Today's quake ruptured towards the SW, based on aftershocks (in pink) and preliminary rupture models. The aftershock sequence of the M7.4 foreshock (in purple) of July 20th overlaps with the epicenter of the M8.8 earthquake. The largest #tsunami amplitude measured by tide gauges was probably 1.7 m (from 0 to peak) at Kahului, Hawaii.
Interesting M5.8 #earthquake near the North coast of Greenland just now. A moment tensor has been determined, so it appears this was a real event and not a glitch (high non double couple % though). I wonder if may not have a been a simple tectonic event?

Hating the heat, but enjoying all the plants and butterflies around right now. Here is a swallowtail #butterfly on lavender, reminding me to plant lots of those in our new backyard.
