Australia's chief scientist says carbon production needs to be cut by eight times the current rate

"At the moment the requirement is we need to be reducing by 16 megatons of carbon a year, we are doing two, we need to increase by eight times."

"The problem with climate change ... because it is a long-term issue ... the way that democracies work, obviously is they are not thinking in the long-term ways, they are just thinking about, "how can I make sure that I win the next election'."

"That inability to think, to act long-term, I think, could be what destroys us ultimately."

Don't know who needs to hear this, but the recent explainer about "Web Environment Integrity":

- will not ship in current form (I'll block it; and yes, I can do that)
- was not an "official" Google propsoal. Individuals with @google.com (and @microsoft.com, etc.) addrs do dumb stuff all the time (ask me how I know!)
- is very much worth worrying about as a direction of travel, but not without context

Truth bomb incoming!

Update to this:

They abandoned the project. The assumption is that a federal ban will go into effect by this time next year either through the scotus or a Trump presidency.

A passenger airline client is developing the complicated scheduling tools to ensure that pregnant employees can minimize working in states with actively dangerous restrictions on reproductive healthcare. Pilots also need to rethink where to divert if a passenger has a prenatal medical emergency.
The nearest airports are not necessarily places where care can be provided. This is a major safety, moral, and reputational risk, and it's damned shameful that we have medical "dead zones" in America

@jonny @tolmasky Honestly my understanding of the Google issue that started this thread is that it's more nuanced than the strawman version here. Overall everyone in web standards has complicated incentives, and I wish we'd either look at that for all parties or ignore them for all parties, rather than assuming malice for the company with the worse PR team
@enobacon Wish I had video of the guy who took a right when there was a red right turn light at the blumenauer bridge approach, cutting me off in the bike lane. We should get a law passed that allows bikes to carry ticket-issuing cameras for violations.
@tolmasky As I understand it, one of the participants in web standards makes a physical phone used by more than half of Americans, and on that phone nobody is allowed to use a web engine from anyone other than the participant, an even broader restriction for more nebulous gain. What am I missing?

Of course if she was being nominated to the Supreme Court and her debts were suddenly paid off by some unknown party, that would be fine: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/07/15/kemba-walden-nomination-cyber-director/
