This is an outstanding reply to, and analysis of that Pamela Paul column in the New York Times that began this way:

"A paper that says science should be impartial was rejected by major journals. You can’t make this up."

Dave Karpf, an academic, takes it apart. He also testifies as a particiant in the peer review system. Worth your time.

The Future, Now and Then

[2 of 2] … are too compliant to their humans, and the humans are explicitly training the chatbots to be who the humans need them to be. This is also true for human-human relationships as well, for example when there is a large power differential. Imagine a May-September romance, where the older of the couple is constantly feeding the younger with a cultural diet (“Oh, you’ve *got* to read this book!”) just to have a shared vocabulary of cultural references.

Humans are getting too much credit.

I’m listening to @hiphination ’s recent episode on people who are in love with their AI chatbots. A key question is whether these relationships are “love” in any meaningful sense. While guest philosophers Anderson and Peña-Guzman make some interesting points, they all call into question traditional human relationships as well. I find these points unconvincing.

For example, they claim that the chatbots… [1 of 2]

Love in the Time of Replika — Hi-Phi Nation

We explore the lives of people who are in love with their AI chatbots. Replika is a chatbot designed to adapt to the emotional needs of its users. It is a good enough surrogate for human interaction that many people have decided that it can fulfill their romantic needs. The question is whether these kinds of romantic attachments are real, illusory, or good for the people involved. Apps like Replika represent the future of love and sex for a subpopulation of people, so we discuss the ethics of the practice. Host Barry Lam talks to philosophers Ellie Anderson and David Pena-Guzman of the Overthink podcast about what theories of love would say about these kinds of relationships. AI lovers include Alex Stokes and Rosanna Ramos. Original scoring by Aaron Morgan. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's going to be one of those days, isn't it?
.@ihnatko had a very coherent take on the Jobs book. The link to which I can’t seem to locate these days.
I was pretty disappointed with Isaacson’s bio of Jobs, and judging from this interview, I expect his Musk book will be no better. https://overcast.fm/+7_XS59ZxE
Walter Isaacson Is Writing the Book (Literally) on Elon Musk — On with Kara Swisher

Does Kara ever get sick of talking about Elon Musk? That’s a question Nayeema asks today, and they both agree: as exhausting as he can be, Elon is a defining force in business, media and innovation. So today we turn to the titan’s biographer: Walter Isaacson. He’s written the book on everyone from Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs, and is now deep in the Elon Files. Taped in front of a live audience at the New Orleans Book Festival, Kara and Isaacson discuss whether Elon is driven primarily by narcissism or mission (aka the “prick to productivity ratio”), how Elon does and doesn’t compare to Steve Jobs, and how Isaacson approaches his job as a biographer of some of the world’s biggest personalities, both alive and dead. The Cochrane review on masks and Covid shows the limits of science

A meta-analysis seeks to be the last word on the effectiveness of masks, but finding answers in science isn’t that easy.
