How do you spot an idiot? Look for the person who is cruel. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest...

Denver last year offered subsidies for buying electric bikes

Their first 600 were snapped up in 10 minutes. Demand was *huge*

Denver ended up issuing over 4,700 (about 2,300 of which went to low-income residents)

Research shows it reduced car-miles driven in the city by 100K a week

My takeaway?

We should have ebike subsidies *everywhere*, and *now*. Cheaper than electric car subsidies, and arguably even more catalytic

Just a small reminder... cuz that's it.

Exactly this.
I want to live in a world where 500 migrants lost at sea evokes more concern than 3 millionaires lost in a vanity submarine.

Ok just putting this out there into the universe to see if it helps. I need a new career direction, but it can't happen overnight. I can't just get a job and say to my existing clients "bye, cya, it's all on you now", so I need a project or two to ease into things and see if it's something I'd like to do, and can make a difference with.

Even in the long term I know I'm not one to have a "job", I want to continue working in my own business, and working with companies that have similar values to me.

Ideally I want to be engaged with executives of small to medium businesses to help them through their journey in building software solutions in a secure and reliable way. Or helping executives in small to medium business with their data privacy and security needs.

Now that's the longer term goal. In the meantime I may want or need to do some projects as part of a bigger team in a bigger company. I have all of the certifications for "teh cyberz" but not much practical experience doing infosec tasks specifically.

I have never been the person who "fit" with recruiters, as I didn't have a linear career path, and that is OK. I am very grateful that all of my work in the past 14 years has been through word of mouth, and Twitter connections. Hopefully I can continue like this.

My work philosophy in that time is "all I can do is to do good work and hope that people will pay me at the end of the month, and continue next month". It has worked nicely.

I just need to move on from "doing the doing" to more "doing the talking", or advice and direction. I don't need to do the actual building and maintenance of software anymore, hopefully.

My dudes. Do NOT make a woman send you messages like the one I just had to send. It's shitty and it's hard that you put this bullshit on us. Especially if we're in the same industry.

I deal with it so often that I have a handful of templates for it so that it costs me less brain space.

And here's another thing...

A friend is moving into his first apartment. His lease is 98 pages!

It seems that some parents worry about how to explain the existence of gay and trans people to their kids.

It’s trivially easy.

“Sometimes, men love men. Sometimes, women love women. Sometimes, people find out that although they have a man’s body, they’d be happier living as a woman - or the other way around.

All these people deserve to be happy and respected, just like you.”

And that’s really all there is to it.

My ducks are absolutely NOT in a row.

I don't even know where some of them are.

And I think one of them may be a pigeon
