Researchers have found it hard to tease apart whether social media is responsible for increasing teenage mental health issues in the US versus the opioid epidemic, rising school shooting, looming environmental disaster and mainstreaming of racism in politics.
However blaming TikTok is an easy out for adults who are leaving their kids a worse world than they inherited.
People now spend more time playing games in @nytimes family of apps than they spend reading news. This goes back to my previous point that every app is now competing for the same pool
of user attention across gaming, streaming, social media, etc.
The NYT isn’t merely competing with other news apps, it’s competing with Candy Crush and TikTok. So far it looks like that realization has paid off for them.

And this, in turn, ensures that we can empathize with characters more effectively and more quickly when we are reading. This is the subject of linguist Lynn Eekhof's Ph.D., which she will receive at Radboud University on 15 January. "I think we need to capitalize more on the wonder of what stories do, rather than merely seeing reading as a practical skill."
