This piece on Wired about Black Twitter is worth your time. It's something I've been thinking about a lot, about how uneven a migration to a new space ends up being.
It also is one thing I'm eyeing about Mastodon. There's a danger that servers become silos if we aren't intentional. If you listen to some of the Black scholars in my field, they are saying as much. Twitter makes their work visible across groups.
So how do we federate for inclusion? It will be a challenge.
I am working with them now on the next iteration, incorporating another year of data and adding more information about what sites did. There are lessons about the importance of taking time to understand and build trust in communities.
(Now I remember why I rarely post about work. It takes a lot of words.)
(I feel like I should post about my work more)
Presented some “what happened during the COVID years” work today at #APPAM The study looked at literacy growth for kids in Save the Children’s rural literacy programming from fall 2019 through spring 2021. It was a fun project because the Save the Children team are fantastic and curious and motivated. Also fun because their participants made upward progress—far better than what we’ve seen elsewhere during that timeframe.
YES!! We did it, Joe!
