I understand the next hours and days will be the peak of the current wave to the Fediverse (unless it causes a tipping point already).

So I want to offer my help to everybody who is new here.

I can help you with:
* finding the right instance (if you're not sure you found it)
* understanding how it all works
* editing your profile and settings
* finding your bubble
* helping others find you
* finding answers to further questions

I can help you by:
* replying publicly
* replying via DM
* videocall & screensharing (one on one or in groups)
* finding others who can answer the questions that I can't

This offer goes to:
* everybody (except trolls)
* not just people on one of our (Fediverse Foundation) instances
* not just people in the climatejustice movement
* not just people using Mastodon (though I don't have experience with all software flavors)
* not even only new people

I speak English and German.

Trump Shifts $44 Billion Away From FEMA Amid Record-Setting Hurricane Season

Lawmakers fear Trump’s move to bypass Congress on unemployment may leave the agency unprepared for recovery efforts.

Truthout

Today is Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

150,000+ Indigenous children suffered great harm at residential schools in Canada.

Residential schools were established with the purpose of erasing Indigenous cultures, spirituality, and languages.

Students lived in substandard conditions and endured physical, emotional, and sometimes sexual, abuse. One in twenty-five Indigenous children died while attending residential schools.

In the future, we won't need programmers, just people who can describe to a computer precisely what they want it to do.
Hello! We are a small independent bookshop in Stow, in the Scottish Borders. We are no longer using Twitter, for obvious reasons, but could use some new followers on Mastodon and other social media channels - where our presence is smaller than on Twitter. Please help / share this is you can! Thank you.

#WordWeavers 2024-08-09 Tell us about a character that you don’t like as a person.

Sooo many, hmm, I'll speak to many who have the same failing - Projection. When grown characters project their own motives and deeds onto others, good or bad, they invalidate the other's existence in their own mind. As humans we all begin at that level of emotional function, but must out grow it with empathy and compassion to become a fully-realized, functional adult citizens.

These flingers of fragile ego may be fun to write, but they are right jerks in real life!

Sam Neil's vile Inspector Chester Campbell in Peaky Blinders & Hugh Grant's Forge demi-villain in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves leap to mind. Ewwwww.

#WordWeavers 2024-08-08: Is your plot linear or not?

I may be tardy to the party, but jumping in at my lucky number 8!
I have 2 divergent wips #litfic & #sff but neither is linear and both are 3rd-person Limited POV.

Coming originally from screenwritng to noveling, it was beaten into me that flashbacks are a rookie no-no if you want to be a serious artist. Equally beaten in is the information reveal timing to maximize twist. Thus I endeavor to sequence by the reader's need to know timing.

Not to say I don't do set-ups, breadcrumbs, foreshadowing, and callbacks, but I strive to open scenes and chapters of the past or future without the finger-to-lips flashback/forward bookend, though sometimes is cannot be helped.

Doing without it forces the reader/viewer back to attention and deeper engagement when challenged (not too hard) to exercise their inference skills by putting the pieces together. This technique helps with your story's memory stickiness as well!
