Joseph Willits on Instagram: "The forcible transfer and forcible displacement of over 1,000 Palestinians in 14 villages in Masafer Yatta in the South Hebron Hills, the demolitions of their homes, and destruction of their livelihoods, by Israel would constitute a war crime. Israeli leaders are never held accountable for the numerous breaches of international law and human rights abuses committed against Palestinians across Palestine, not just in Masafer Yatta. Such plans to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their homes, their lands, plans of an ongoing Nakba, through an illegal occupation by a racist government, committing the crime of apartheid against Palestinians, are depraved, they’re a disgrace. They’re also the actions, plans and desires of successive Israeli governments, leaders, backed by public opinion, sometimes dressed up as ‘liberal’ or ‘progressive’. Things are worsening (or rather the mask slips a little more) with an Israeli government which is explicitly racist, driven by stated desires to crush Palestinians in various ways, with pro-annexationist policies and promoting Jewish supremacy. On forming the new government, Netanyahu posted that Jewish people have an "exclusive and unquestionable right to all areas of the Land of Israel” including occupied Palestinian territory, the occupied West Bank & occupied Syrian territory in the Golan.
There have been many moments to wake up to such lived realities for Palestinians of brutal occupation and apartheid, but it’s always been a choice not to. I doubt there will ever be a reckoning, even as the situation becomes ever more grim, and the impunity and lack of accountability with which such actions are carried out by Israeli governments, illegal settlers, and soldiers, ever more brazen, dangerously brave, supported by the spineless. Violent settlers are able to carry out excessive and grotesque violence in full view and in full knowledge that there will be zero accountability for them.
