PC building has hit a snag, my extra - chunky choice of CPU cooler means no
space for a case fan or GPU - may have to rethink the cooling solution - what is compact, but effective?
New computer assembly has begun; LINUX Mint Debian has been chosen as the target distro. Haven’t installed a Linux on a bare machine in a decade, am expecting the usual driver problems..
My Forth VM inches forward; did some work to move the startup away from the C testing harness and into the assembler startup phase. I keep dancing round what’s necessary to create the outer interpreter but will get there soon!
I had forgotten how much discipline it takes to write good assembler and how agonisingly incremental progress is. Programmers these days don’t play in hard mode..
..I swear after this I’m just going to write something small and cute in gdscript just for the contrast!
I forgot what I'd been working on when I stopped last night, so when I opened my Godot project today I got jumpscared by my own antagonist!

My gamdev DOS Forth inches along; got the basic parsing words going - next for dictionary building..soon will have an outer interpreter and be able to develop in FORTH rather than asm..should pick up speed, then!
Contemplating fonts in 640x480 palettized video - whether to go with a straight bitmap font that can be blitted or a straight 1 bit per pixel font with no hope of antialiasing..
Progress on my FORTH-based software toy inches forward. Had the idea of writing a stack visualiser that writes directly to the top line of text in video memory, will help a lot with the early boot phase. Still need branches and dictionary building code before I can get an outer interpreter..
The main thing my retro-coding is teaching me is humility in the face of all the way x86 assembly language coding can go wrong! I will get this FORTH VM up and running, dammit!
Considering the pros and cons of buying a new PC now. I held off because I can't see myself having the time to use it much, given my current gig lasts into 2027. On the other hand, is AI going to eat all the DRAM like some demented PacMan escaped from a simulation..?
