I drove into town today. Compared to last week, the number of #trump signs is maybe 10%. Looks like the vast majority of people either don't support him anymore, or are embarrassed to acknowledge their support all of a sudden.
It was good to see so many fellow minded people out and about today at the Austin #HandsOff protest. My eyes, ears and throat are now full of oak pollen, but it was worth it.

Impressive turnout today in #Chicago.

An estimated 30,000 people joined the Chicago edition of the "Hands Off” day of action. https://blockclubchicago.org/2025/04/05/massive-crowds-march-downtown-against-trump-musk-at-hands-off-protest/

Why don't I like your resume?

You hit all the points on the job description. Why aren't you getting a call? It's not the ATS filtering you out. It is not the TA team. It is one of the hiring managers, maybe myself. How do you "get by" me?

In this article, I hope to help a little by taking a swing at explaining what I think when I review resumes. As always: Warning- Opinions (and a first draft) Ahead!

It’s not the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) filtering you out. It is not the Talent Acquisition (TA) team. It is one of the hiring managers, maybe myself. How do you “get by” me? I know creating a resume is stressful, you get conflicting advice, and you might be doing it when you are out of work and all that stress and contradiction will try to overwhelm you. Jim’s Rules

While messing around a little bit with prompts in Bing Copilot, I decided to ask it to create a programming language that was easy to code and hard to debug. What did I get? The results were surprisingly unsurprising.

Thought: If you’ve got a position listed on your resume that says “Software Development Team Lead”, the description of the role should start out with things you did as a leader.

Jim’s Rules

Taking a pause from the series at https://jimsrules.com on things to think about when becoming a leader, I took a morning to update my Expressur basic arithmetic library so I can test claims that .NET 8 had significant performance improvements over .NET 7.

Short answer? Add me to the people who say “apparently yes”, at least for pure C# code.

Jim’s Rules

Warning: Opinions ahead! I am building Jim’s Rules to share my thoughts about technology, teamwork, and leadership in software development. Viewpoints expressed are my own and not those of my current or any prior employer.

Jim’s Rules
@flowchainsenseisocial when I named it I was being somewhat tongue in cheek. What it became is “rules” in the sense of a “usually valid generalization” rather than a “prescribed guide for conduct or action”. I.e more like the Pareto Principle than the rules of football.
