If you lived through the assassination of JFK, and you are old enough, you remember it well. I was in third grade, and it was one of my first traumatic experiences.

Older friends thought that WW3 was imminent. I was oblivious to that threat, but could feel the loss through my teacher and then my parents.

Interesting (flash bulb memory!) I remember the caissons as being in color even though we had a b/w tv.

In any case, his loss, and later MLK and Bobby were a terrible blow

Highly recommend ProWritingAid (which is currently and briefly on a 50% off Black Friday sale).

In addition to punctuation, spacing, etc. it is terrific at grammar and "better writing" suggestions. Of the latter I only accept about 30%, but those are very valuable.

You can turn on and off what you want to see, and you can get comprehensive reports on your larger documents.

The Chrome plug-in works great and works great here on the Mastodon Web interface.

Great writing made easy with ProWritingAid

The toolkit for storytellers. A grammar checker, style editor, paraphraser and more. Available inside your favorite writing app.

@lexstarwalker Final (?) followup. I have taken the time to create my styles and style sets, and converted my GoogleDoc to Word, which I'm now storing on OneDrive (which maintains the styles).

The truth is, I was wrong; this is a much better way to work. And the ability to rearrange through the navigation pane is terrific.

Thank you again for doing all the work on the incredibly easy-to-follow directions

I have bookmarked your link and will be passing it along to my writing workshop.

@thenickrandolph It is great within the context of not being a toxic single-source environment.
@brendoneus @edmistond
Fun! Good luck with it, hope it works out great.
@itsafronomics Unfortunate that the headlines here make it seem as if Jon Steward was the problem.
@brendoneus @edmistond What is smilodon?

@Teri_Kanefield We are in violent agreement 🤣

Glad you are here, should generate some very interesting conversations.

@lexstarwalker Great, thanks!

I've been leery of using italics since I heard Benjamin Dryer say that one should trust the reader to put the emphasis wherever they choose.

Not sure I believe that, but it has slowed my use of italics. (He also challenged us to write an entire book without the word very!)

Thanks again; I worked my way through your excellent tutorial and will be working with Word and styles from now on.

FDR, Thurgood Marshall, Susan B. Anthony and others taught us the way forward.

We got out of the age of robber barons with the New Deal.

Things To Do - Teri Kanefield

Okay, so how do we strengthen democracy? The way to strengthen democracy is with more democracy, or what Barack Obama calls citizenship. As Obama said in 2020:  Even if the methods are new, sowing the seeds of doubt, division, and discord to turn Americans against each other is an old trick. The antidote is citizenship: […]
