And instance federation/defederation is not something I can easily explain to someone looking for social networks. In the early days of these networks, I remember instantly losing attention when I heard "federation" because it's a relatively complicated and technical topic that most users probably don't care about, until it breaks something they expected to work. This doesn't work like email where you can generally pick any server and email anyone else.
Moving instances on Mastodon also is not as good as it was promised upfront. For instance, I have my identity here with mastodon.social, but if I had gone on some smaller niche interest group server, what would I do if it shuts down? Now I'd have to go and re-update all the links again, and lose all the posts. Only other option would be self-hosting from start, which is a huge commitment that most won't want to make
I was worried the AT protocol stuff would have some weird licenses, but everything seems to be MIT and/or Apache 2, so even if the underlying corp tries to do something shady, presumably forks could keep the interoperability (similar to Redis/Valkey stuff).
I also quite like the docs on setting up your own PDS. Seems more doable than having own mastodon instance where others might not be able to find me or comments might not federate, something I've seen concerns about from other users on here. I'm not sure what other considerations there are on the AT protocol side, but it seems more accessible to get started
So I've been giving Bluesky a go and, perhaps controversial for this platform, I actually like it. I was able to get my handle as `@jerr.dev` quickly and easily (just a DNS TXT entry), which is a huge boon for having a single identity regardless of platform, and makes it a lot easier to quickly verify larger accounts if they are legit just by looking at the name.
@overcastfm I don’t know if this is an iOS/AirPlay issue or Overcast, but every time I listen to something and switch in or out of the app, the podcast audio drops for a second. I mostly notice it with my first gen HomePod, and I am running this on an iPhone 15 Pro so the phone should not be resource limited. Sometimes the whole podcast pauses even :/
Happy Crowdstrike outage day to all who celebrate
