I'm a disability rights activist, mom, public policy nerd, hiker, skeptical Jew, "Jen the Handymom," hard of hearing, dog lover, reader, cancer survivor, Nollywood fan, and just slightly sarcastic. I live near Seattle, have also lived in DC, Chicago, and San Francisco. The WELL and LiveJournal in its heyday remain my ideal archetype for social media communities, with deep and nuanced connections.

@skimlines I've heard they are not prioritizing accessibility in their rush to scale up. Basically said outright that they're not going to make it accessible until later. F*ck that. Still on the waitlist though.
@jahleesu Skunks are lawful evil. Wolverines are neutral evil. Porcupines, though.... true neutral?
@ascreaminpossum Right? I'm brand new here and already had several good conversations. Seems like people may challenge but assume good intent and listen to replies.
Another day, another access complaint. Fourth time this week I've contacted someone about lack of captions (hospital follow-up instructions, local PTA, political nonprofit, and research study). Bumped up to organization's ADA coordinator in two cases. Exhausting.

If you're curious about what a 66 million dollar website, the 1st US #VR captioning lawsuit, two proposed new national laws in the US, and (maybe) new web access regulations have to do with your work in accessibility and tech generally -- join me for the free online Digital Accessibility Legal Update next week: https://go.3playmedia.com/wbnr-12-08-2022-lainey

After 233 years, Congressman Hakeem Sekou Jeffries becomes the FIRST Black Person to lead either house of Congress. Huzzah! Representation Matters!

“It’s taken this long in history …for there to be a critical mass of non-white males in the House of Representatives within a particular party, having risen in seniority, and having demonstrated that their leadership capabilities are as good or better as anybody else’s.”

House Democrats Expected to Pick Top Leadership That Includes Zero White Men—A First for Congress

For the first time in U.S. history, the top ranks of House leadership for one party won’t include any white men.

How to Talk About Diversity & Inclusion With People Who Disagree

Ask them to define terms and help you to understand. Communication often fails when participants don’t agree to the definitions of certain terms and end up talking past one another. If you can agree on certain terms at the start of the conversation, you’ve already accomplished common ground and the communication may be more respectful and effective.
