I'm a disability rights activist, mom, public policy nerd, hiker, skeptical Jew, "Jen the Handymom," hard of hearing, dog lover, reader, cancer survivor, Nollywood fan, and just slightly sarcastic. I live near Seattle, have also lived in DC, Chicago, and San Francisco. The WELL and LiveJournal in its heyday remain my ideal archetype for social media communities, with deep and nuanced connections.
@skimlines I've heard they are not prioritizing accessibility in their rush to scale up. Basically said outright that they're not going to make it accessible until later. F*ck that. Still on the waitlist though.

Another day, another access complaint. Fourth time this week I've contacted someone about lack of captions (hospital follow-up instructions, local PTA, political nonprofit, and research study). Bumped up to organization's ADA coordinator in two cases. Exhausting.

Ask them to define terms and help you to understand. Communication often fails when participants don’t agree to the definitions of certain terms and end up talking past one another. If you can agree on certain terms at the start of the conversation, you’ve already accomplished common ground and the communication may be more respectful and effective.
