How to Talk About Diversity & Inclusion With People Who Disagree

Ask them to define terms and help you to understand. Communication often fails when participants don’t agree to the definitions of certain terms and end up talking past one another. If you can agree on certain terms at the start of the conversation, you’ve already accomplished common ground and the communication may be more respectful and effective.

@zhivi I just started reading Ibram X. Kendi's book, "How to be an Anti-Racist." I can tell you, most of the people in my life are not at all prepared to accept the true definition of racist, assimilationist, or segregationist. I talk about race a lot with other white people and I see little glimmers of learning and hope and I think I'm making a difference. I want this world to be better.
@LizzieSpeaks thank you for doing your part.
@zhivi You're very welcome. Thanks for helping me :)

@zhivi This is Really Old School. As in, Socrates and Plato. "Give me a fixed point & a long enough pole and I can move the world." The fixed point is common ground. The pole is the logical argument that includes honest rhetoric. If you don't have common ground, you can't have a rational discussion of anything.

This is why giving time to fascists is a bad idea, as they start in their own world. They have to crash against reality to be ready for logic.

@zhivi
This also helps reveal bad-faith participants. Distinguishing them from the well-intenioned but ill-informed is a challenge, especially in my tech industry & tech bros actively making a game of closet fascism.
I realized a former coworker was feeding me subtle neo-fascist rhetoric, including portraying democracy as a failed, claiming U.S. D's are equally bad as R's, etc.. As I drilled in on a common understanding it became increasingly likely that my suspicions were valid.
@toolbear glad you realized this. We have to be aware of the pretenders. As the song says, smiling faces lie sometimes and they don't tell the truth.
