During the winter, I like to plan next year's trips and also think back on past adventures.
One of my favorite treks is the Fisherman's Way of the
Rota Vicentina on the coast of Portugal. We did this as
a five-day backpacking trip with our then-teenaged
girls. During the day, the vast Atlantic stretched away
on our left as we hiked north. At night, we either stayed
in campgrounds on the edge of villages along the way
or asked locals if there were rooms to rent.

On a month-long car-camping trip in
Europe some years ago, we camped near Arudy, in the
French Pyrenees, for a few nights. One evening, after
the girls had befriended the young daughter of the
owners in the pool, we were invited to a paella party by the family who ran the
campground. Our older daughter was studying French
in high school at the time and she was able to help
translate in what was to become a very fun and
memorable evening.

When our main crew left Switzerland after shooting for Real Road Adventures, I stayed behind with Sherri James, one of our videographers, to shoot footage of driving over a few iconic Alpine passes in our EV. In one day, we covered the Simplon, Furka, and Oberalp passes, driving from Bellinzona to Chur and arriving with plenty of charge on the battery. What a wild ride!
