Any moment now, as Christmas and (American) Thanksgiving get closer, people will start posting suggestions of things to donate to food banks and 'Reverse Advent Calendars'.

I can't stress this enough:
Just. Give. Money.

Food banks can usually get more bang for their buck than you can.
They'll probably be able to give you a tax receipt for money, but not for cans.
And it lets them buy, store, and distribute food in the volumes they need and can handle.

(Please boost to make sure people get the message.)

There is a nasty part of me that *really* wishes for a permanent, searchable database of all the people cheering Musk's bad behavior on.

Because seriously: at this point it's nothing but a stream of abusive managerial behavior, and technical illiteracy. So all of these sycophants going, "Yeah -- you show them who the Boss is!" are clearly not people I ever want to work with, much less for. It's a bright light, drawing in the very most unpleasant moths...

A number of people have pointed out the importance of listening to Black voices on the topic, and I absolutely agree.

OTOH, it’s never right to force activism on someone who just wants to live their life. So listening to Black voices and suggestions does not absolve anyone else of the responsibility to actively seek to learn about issues, and certainly not of the responsibility to do something about what they learn.

@Gargron people were expressing that they expected me to put my experiences in my daily life of racism behind a CW.

Then users of #BlackMastodon on many servers began to contact me privately to tell me how they were treated for talking about every day occurrences in their lives.

I then observed that just being yourself in public is extra labor that white people don’t have to do. And I began to receive abuse disguised as lectures about not wanting to use content warnings.

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
