"If you hear something calling your name in the woods... no you didn't". This #horror title is living up to the hype for me. Black woman returns to her hometown in Rust Belt PA and tragedy strikes - in a way that mirrors something from her own youth. I am from that part of PA and the race, class and gender identity revealed in this story ring VERY true. It also scratches the itch of #Appalachian folklore. Well written, creepy and suspenseful. #bookstodon #books
I completed Ghost Story (Peter Straub) this morning. It's a crime that I waited all these years to read this magnificent story. Most excellent! If you've never read it, and enjoy a drama with mystery, suspense, and a touch of the supernatural, this is for you! #GhostStory #horror

Shadow Bites: An Alan Baxter Horror Sampler by Alan Baxter

165. More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon

🦊Sci-fi (though I'd argue it's genre-defying) written in 1953.
🦊Explores how religion fucks girls over, how a "found family" can be as challenging as the one you're born into, and the challenge of being different in a homogenous society.
🦊Telepathy! Anti-gravity! Evolution!
🦊Highly philosophical.

164. Upgrade by Blake Crouch

🦊Solid sci-fi action, set in a future where gene-manipulation is strictly regulated (for good reasons?).
🦊I don't want to spoil it, so let's settle for simple: The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
🦊Gene editing! Family feud! Sacrifices!
🦊Fast paced. If you enjoyed Dark Matter, you'll enjoy this one.
🦊Could have toned down the details on specific genes.
🦊Another one where I recommend you avoid both the blurb and all reviews if you plan on reading it.

163. Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James

🦊Dark Star Trilogy #1
🦊Shapeshifting tracker hired to trace boy.
🦊Witches. Albinos. Mercenaries. Gendershifters. Cannibals. Mermaids.
🦊My 2nd by James. Too much sexual assault/rape/pedophilia/incest that isn't being adressed in any way, in terms of trauma for the victims, for me to enjoy. The repeated descriptions of the stink of ass-cracks, cunts, and dongs – floppy or otherwise – also turned me off this book.
🦊Will not be continuing series.

"As some wise man or other said, there is no gravity; the earth just sucks."

~The Regulators by 'Richard Bachman' (Stephen King)~

I'm… *checks notes*… 21 books behind on my Books-Read-in-2022-list, and on the day of New Year's Eve I usually try to finish as many started-on books as I can. I'm afraid I'm going to get a bit spammy today. My apologies in advance😬
Recovering addict Mallory gets a job as a live in nanny, but something's not quite right. This book kept me up until 4 am because I wanted to see what happens next. Respect for that. It is a domestic thriller with horror themes. Scare level: The Ring. Not much gore, highly creepy.
Definitely get the physical book, not the audio or even the kindle version. It is full of drawings that are critical to the storytelling experience and often page turns reveal new clues. #books #bookstodon
I’m Building the Perfect Beast of a Stephen Graham Jones collection! With today’s #bookmail - the tongue-trippingly titled ZOMBIE SHARKS WITH METAL TEETH🧟🦈🤘🦷 - I now have all 4 of his story collections! My 2023 goal is to complete a read of all #StephenGrahamJones’s fiction. #bookstagram
