Seriously. Guinea worms are awful. Look them up, but be prepared for a 30 inch (inch, not centimeter) nematode that emerges from human flesh.
So, the important part: The world doesn't give James Earl Carter nearly enough credit for almost eradicating Draculcuniasis -- guinea-worm disease -- in his lifetime.
He wanted to outlive the guinea worm. He didn't quite make it, but he got really blessed close.
When the Carter Foundation took over the guinea worm project in 1986, it was endemic in 20 countries and affected 30 million people a year with horrific, debilitating pain and mobility issues, for weeks and months at a time.
Last year, there were 10 reported cases of guinea-worm disease worldwide, and it's considered endemic in 5 countries, with more close to certification.
The world needs more Jimmy Carters. I'm glad we had the one we did.
